RULING UPHELD POSITION OF SOUTH AUCKLAND Advice from the New Zealand Union was received at a meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Rugby Union last evening that the Auckland union's ruling on law !'J of the tfame had been upheld. The law made it clear that points scored by a team which had more than fifteen players on the field must stand, although the additional man or men must he removed when the position was discovered. It was resolved that a copy of the letter should be forwarded to the Xorthcote club. The New Zealand union notified that the reinstatements of H. G. Kendall and 1. L. Burgess had been approved. The Sacred Heart College first fifteen was granted permission to play Wairarapa College at Masterton on August 18. Brother Maurice will be manager. Permission was also granted to the Aotea team to play the I'aeroa representatives at. Waihi next Saturday. The Otahuhu seniors were permitted to play at Waihi on August IS. The Waiuku union requested a match at Eden I'ark for its representative team. It was decided to refer the matter to the match committee with a favourable recommendation for a game against a senior Xeam on September I. A report was read by the union's country adviser on the position of the .South Auckland union. It was resolved to instruct the secretary of the I'ukekohe union to call a meeting of South Auckland unions on August 30 for the purpose of reinstating the South Auckland union and electing officers, each union to be asked to send at least two delegates. Two delegates of the Auckland union will attend the meeting. Congratulations were extended to the following Auckland players who had been selected for the North Island team: —J. Dunn, M. N. I'aewai, B. Wahlegrave, M. McHugh, J. Gunning and T>. Christian. It was decided to send letters of sympathy In the relatives of W. R. Mansill and W. Sharpe, who were killed in aircraft accidents. McCarthy 'selector). THE LEAGUE CODE RECORD GATE RECEIPTS Discussing a report on the Auckland versus West Coast match last Saturday, the treasurer of the Auckland Rugby Leagui, Mr E. J. Knowling, stated at last evening's meeting of the management committee that the receipts were in excess of those for any representative game played since the outbreak of war and were a record for such a fixture. West Coast's share of the gate receipts was £-135. The Balmain Club advised that it would he unable to visit New Zealand this season. The chairman. Mr J. W. Watson, stated that transport was assured to Auckland, but there was no guarantee of a return passage to Sydney. Mr Watson added that an endeavour would be made to have a Sydney club team visit Auckland next season.

Mr D. Wilkie announced that, owing to the cancellation of the Balmain visit, the senior officers' association was of the opinion that a return match between the Maoris and pakehas should be played. It was agreed that consideration should be given to this proposal. In connection with chairman's day at Carlaw Park next Saturday, the secretary reported that invitations to attend had been accepted by numerous sporting bodies. Mr Watson made reference to the donation of 100 guineas from the ladies' social club toward the injured players' fund. Mrs I Scott, the secretary, wrote expressing appreciation for the assistance received during the season. ASSOCIATION GAMES CHATHAM CUP COMPETITION The control board of the Auckland Football Association decided last evening to commence the Xorth Island final of the Chatham Cup at Bland ford Park on Saturday week at 2.45 p.m. The Falcon Cup game between Eastern Suburbs and Thistle will be the curtain-raiser. As the latter match is a knockout and may require extra time in the event of a draw, it was agreed to commence play at 1 p.m. In t-he Falcon Cup competition extra time of 15 minutes-each way is required and in the Chatham Cup fixture 10 minutes each way. The Ardmore club forwarded a challenge to the winner of the Whenuapai-Navy match for the Munro Cup. Entries for the Falcon Cup competition were received from the following teams:—Whenuapai, Xorth Shore, Eastern Suburbs, Philomel, Comrades, Ardmore, Ponsonby, Thistle, MetroCollege, Watersiders, Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, Swanson. BOXING CONTESTS HAWES DEFEATS HOGGARTH (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday In a fast and clever exhibition of boxing. Ron Mawes (Canterbury), 5.9, outpointed the New Zealand bantam-weight champion. Tot Hoggarth (West Coast). 5.7, in a professional feather-wiight contest tonight. Hawes was too clever for his harder-hitting opponent and held a strong lead on points until the tenth and final round, in which Hoggarth desperately, but unsuccessfully, fought for a knock-out.
