LEAGUE THRILLS

REPRESENTATIVE GAME NARROW WIN FOR AUCKLAND Thrilling incidents were a featuro of a game of League football played at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, when the Auckland representatives defeated West Coast by 8 points to 7. The visitors gave a high-class display and were a little unlucky to lose. Victory for Auckland came in the last few minutes, when a penalty goal decided the issue. West Coast had led throughout, its backs being superior to the Auckland set,. in the second spell, however, the Auckland forwards rose to the occasion and gave the defence a torrid 20 minutes. The game was not devoid of sensational incidents. Halfway through the second spell J. Forrest (West Coast) and B. Xordgren (Auckland), wingthreequarters. were injured in a hard tackle. Forrest received a cut over the eye and Nordgren a gash on his head. A St. John Ambulance officer refused to allow' the two players to continue and, in spite of protests, the referee, Mr (3. Kelly, ordered the players to the dressing room. Both went to hospital for treatment and the teams played short for the last 25 minutes. The attendance was estimated at between ] 2,000 and 14.000. From the kick-off West Coast impressed with the positional play of its backs and the fast cover defence round the scrum. In the, latter direction, Auckland's inside backs. Murray and H. Clarke, were effectively checked by McXaughlon and C. Mountford. The shortgrubber kick was a little overdone by the West Coast five-eighths and scoring chances were lost.

Visitors Open Scoring McXaughlon opened the score for the visitors, with a good penalty goal. Time and again the West Coast forwards, headed by K. Mountford, well supported by Newton, raided the Auckland territory, hut W. S. Clarke proved sound on defence. The whistle was freely blown for minor breaches, hut it did not seriously check the speed of the game. Another penalty goal, by C. Mountford, increased West Coast's lead. From a scrum 30 yards out. Ord passed smartly to C. Mountford, McNaughlon and W. Mountford, who brilliantly heat Wiles and Murray, and raced on to. score a fine try. Halftirne came a few minutes later with the score: West Coast. 7; Auckland, u.

The second spell opened sensationally when R. Clarke made a fine opening, caught the defence out of position for the first lime and passed to Nordgren, who outpaced the opposition to score at the corner. The play rose to great heights as the local forwards put renewed vigour into their efforts. K. Nurse, who came on at half time in place of Lowther. who was injured, gained 50 yards in a fast run.

Excitement was intense as Thompson and Ririnui, well supported in the loose by Ryan and Rutherford, swept over the West Coast backs. The loss of Nordgren and Forrest was an unfortunate incident, and Hardwick and K. Mountford left their respective packs to play on the wings. Major secured in the loose and raced hard to Wiles, who passed to Nurse, and the Auckland wing went over for a fine try. West Coast, 7; Auckland, G. Penalty Decides Issue The pace was now lull on. C. Mountford was obstructed by Murray, but the visitors' captain missed an easy shot at goal. Tbe Auckland forwards then obtained a firm grip on the game and outplayed tho visiting pack. The tackling, however, never faltered. In the last five minutes Auckland was awarded a penalty for McNaughton standing offside, and W. Clarke kicked a goal to place his team one point in front. Just on time Thompson made a fine dash and Hardwick was stopped a few inches from the goal-line with a good tackle bv Soster. A fine game ended with honours about, even. A feature of tbe match was the clever pla.v of C. Mountford and J. McNaughton, the We'd (.'oast five-eighths. McNaughlon played excellent constructive football. Mountford kicked more than usual, hut he is just, as clever on attack as previously. W. S. Clarke, fullback for Auckland, played easily his best game to date, his kicking being faultless. Nordgren, on tho wing, revealed plenty of dash and played a grand game. R. Clarke, five-eighths, made amends in the second spell, while Murray did a lot of useful work, his tackling often saving the home team. Wiles was also good. Nurse justified his place on the wing and may hold this position. Hardwick played a splendid game among the Auckland forwards and also when he went to the wing. Ririnui and Thompson were a tower of strength and Ryan also playeo consistently well. Newton, tbe West Coast forward, compared favourably with any on the ground, while MoBride and Aynsley were always prominent. At centre-threequarter W. Mountford was brilliant at times. „ . Tries fur Auckland were scored by Nordjr rcfi and Xursc, and W. Clarkfi kicked a penalty goal. For West Coast W. Mountford scored a try and C. Mountford and McJsauKnton each kicked a penalty goal.
