THE LEAGUE CODE

LEADING TEAM BEATEN RICHMOND'S NARROW WIN A fine gnme of Rugby League football wag witnessed at Carlaw Park oil Saturday afternoon when Richmond defeated Otahuhu b,y ft single point and thus took the lead in the senior championship. A feature of the game was the passing and splendid combination of the backs of bolh teams. The second spell was particularly exciting and Richmond deserved its victory.

Another good display was witnessed in ttio curtain-raiser, between Pouso.iby and City, and again good teamwork was a feature of the match. On No, 2 ground Manukau gained a single-point victory in a well-contested game against Mount Albert. North Shore defeated Point Chevalier in the early game at Fowlds Park, which was a sea o 1 mud, Newton gained its first win of the season by defeating Maris! by 5 points to 4. The playing area at Carlaw Park recovered well after heavy rain, and there was a good attendance Results were:— Richmond, 3; Otahuhu, 2. Ponaonby, 16; City, 8. Manukau, 13; Mount Albert, 12. North Shore, 10; Point Chevalier, 3. Newton, 5; Marlst, 4.

Otahuhu suffered a heavy loss when R. Speedy, the representative five-eighths, did not assist his team owing to injuries, and Fogarty, a forward, played in this position against Richmond, On the run of play Richmond was the better team, Out Otahuhu may have gained victory. ,T. Speedy broke awayearly in the game and had good support from the forwards. He had the Richmond defence beaten except for Furneli, On reaching the latter Speedy attempted to kick when a pass to N. Johnson would have given Otahuhu a try. Furneli charged down the kick. There was a lot of whistle for minor breaches, Otahuhu being awarded six penalties in succession. Richmond was unfortunate to lose L. Williams, the halfback, and he was replaced by Rennic, who played well. Twice in the first spell Robertson, at fiveeighths, showed bad judgment in running infield when the threcquarters, Magill and Lowther, had good opportunities to score. On one occasion Lowther had a clear run in. From a scrum near halfway P. Williams started a passing bout and the ball was handled by four Richmond forwards before D. Ryan raced over for a try, I,owl her missed an easy two points from in front of the goal.

Brady, at centre for Otatinhn. made a brilliant breakaway, hut slipped as be swerved past Furneli, Die Richmond fullback. II looked a certain try lost. Tho score at half-time favoured Richmond by :! points to 2 and no points were scored in the second spell. Furneli the Richmond fullback, played easily his best game since returning from the Middle East. Many time he started passing bouts from defensive positions. The wings, Prenlcr and I.owlher, did well on attack. The former is a very promising player. Lowther lacked opportunities in the_ first spell as tinresult of Robertson running back infield. Magill was very sound at centre and C. Williams gave good service from the halfback position. Among the forwards, Thompson and Ryan were outstanding, and Davis, who was playing hin first game this season, performed well. Satlierley also was prominent in tho loose.

Brady, the Otahuhu centre, was tho best back on the ground and his omission from the Auckland team is a surprise. M. Johnson was the best of the Otahuhu forwards.

The pcorers wore:—Richmond, !) (try by J?,van) Otalmhti, 2 (penalty goal by Riley); Ponsonby, 10 (trios by Nurse, 2, Nordgren anil Williams, Nordgren converting two), City, 8 (tries by Taylor and Donovan and penalty goal by Silva); North Shore, 10 (tries by Read and Chatham, Clarke convertinir one and kicking a penalty goalj; Point Chevalier, (try by St ,Tohn); Mnnukau. 13 (tries by TCwe, Kirk wood and Tc Tai, Butler converting one and kicking a penalty coal), Monnf Albert, 12 (tries by Clement and Shadbolt. Cranch converting one and kicking two penally goals). Auckland Team.—Much interest is being taken in the game between the West Coast Rugby League representatives and Auckland, who will meet at Carlaw Park nexl Saturday. West Const defeated Canterbury by (10 points to .*> last Saturday week. The Auckland team, selected hv Messrs .T. Kirwan, ,T. Clark and A, ,T. McGregor, is as follows:—Fullback, W. S. Clark; threoquarters, B. Nordgren, A. Wiles B. Lowfher; five-eighths, R. Clarke, •T. Murray; halfback, C. Major; forwards, D. Ryan, X. Rutherford, R. McLeod, P. Ririniii, A. Thompson, T. TTardwick. Reserves: Backs. R. Nnrse. M. Robertson; forwards, B. Graham. N. Johnson. ASSOCIATION GAMES TWO TEAMS SHARE- LEAD By defeating Comrades, f)—3, at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon, Whenuapni now shares the lead with North Shore in the .Auckland Football Association's senior championship. North Shore drew with Eastern Suburbs at Devoriport. Philomel was lucky to beat Ardmore in (he curtain-raiser. Features of the games were four goals scored by Wilkinson for Whenuapai. while Richards added three goals to his total for North Shore. Playing for Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys against Swanson, Hayes netted five times.

•In tho main attraction at Blandford Park, which was in splendid order in suite of the : heavy rain, play was of an exciting nature. I hoth defences being well testpd. The score jat half-time was 2-all. Bell, the Whennapai ! outside right. who had played a great came, did not return in the second spell, a recent ; eye injury necessitating attention, and Brooks i replaced iiim. The play reached a hiarh standard. with Comrades' holding the attacks of the thrnstfnl Whennapai vanguard, ; while at the other end, Whennapal's defence employed smothering tactics. Thpre was little ; outstanding in the earjy irame \rdmore being unlucky not to finish some nice move- , iiients with goals. Following were the senres ."id scorers:— Whenunpai. <"i (Wilkinson, 4, Hone Ede. 2). | Comrades. 3 (Masters 2.
