THE LEAGUE CODE

A ONE-SIDED CONTEST WELLINGTON OVERWHELMED ■A crowd estimated at 12.000 witnessed the Auckland Rugby League representatives overwhelm Wellington at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. Auckland scored 12 tries, but only three of them were converted. The score of 40 points to 7 about represented the difference between the trams. The southerners lacked the speed of the Auckland backs, who gave a high-class display of the passing game. The Auckland forwards were also too fast in the loose and gave excellent support to the backs in passing bouts, Tho Wellington team was bewildered by the tactical and positional play of the home team. Auckland, however, was a little fortunate in getting three tries from forward passes. The referee penalised Wellington on tho only three occasions the visitors got the ball from set scrums in the first spell. The omission of P. Kirinui from the Auckland forwards caused some surprise when it was made known that the selectors iiad dropped the big forward owing to his failure to attend training. , the first few minutes of the first spell. Wellington looked like putting up a good showing and sound tackling subdued the Auckland backs. It was actually 17 minutes after the kick-off that Auckland opened its run of tries. Speedy and Murray were associated in a good burst through the defence and the latter beat J. Hemi badly. The Auckland forwards joined in the altack, and Kyan went over for a try. Masters of Situation The crowd soon realised that the home team knew too much of the finer points of i lllK ' KUOII hooking gave the fast local backs possession. They kept, a good bold of the ball, which was rarely kicked. Oollop, the Wellington captain, beat Speedy badly, enabling Holland to outpace the local backs and score a nice try. Auckland then led by ' points to o. The Auckland backs, however, proved masters of the situation and excellent combination resulted in tries coming from most passing bouts. The referee was a little lenient toward Auckland, as some forward passes went unchecked. The score at half-time was: Auckland, 21; Wellington, r>. . l';; lr| .v in the second spell, Mallinder, the Wellington halfback, was applauded for a clever run alon<r the touch-line, and lie gained 00 yards before Wiles checked his progress. Excellent, combination and understanding between Wiles, centre, and Xordgren, gave the winger two good tries, and Auckland scored freely thereafter. Graham and McLeod made fine openings for Speedy and Wiles to score tries. Murray made an opening in (lie centre for Hardwick to score. 1 hen Xordgren gained his third try while Lowther also made his total three tries. The game was altogether too one-sided to be interesting, and the standard of play in Auckland is without doubt much higher than in Wellington. Successful hooking by Rutherford plaved an important part in Auckland's victory, the ball came cleanly out to the halfback, Major, who did really well in his first representative game. Murray played his customary dashing game and it usually took two visiting players to stop the Auckland captain. Speedy rose to the occasion splendidly and was very elusive on attack. Best Back on Field Easily the best back on the ground was B. Lowther, tho Auckland wing-threequar-tcr, who used his pace to advantage, and was in nearly every attacking movement. Lowther had been laid aside for some weeks owing to injuries. Xordgren did not get so many opportunities as Lowther, but scored three tries. His handling early in the game was not good and dropped passes lost him two tries. Wiles was tho pivot of the Auckland attack and bis ability to change direction fooled tho visitors. Clarke, as fullback, was sound throughout and started many passing bouts. Hardwick stood out as the best forward on the ground, and never missed a chance to pass to the five-eighths. His speed is an asset. Thompson was also very good in the loose and handled well. Ryan and Graham worked effectively in the scrums and in the loose. The occasion proved too big for L. Hemi, tho 17-year-old Wellington fullback, who came with a reputation. Early in the game, Hemi received an injury to his ribs and this may have affected his display. Gollop was easily the best of the visiting backs and he made an impressive shown.g, in spite of the strong opposition. Mallinder did well at halfback. Tho forwards were outplayed in all phases of the game, although Upston and Kenny did useful work.

tries for Auckland were scored by Xordgren (3), Lowther (3), Speedy (2), Ryan. McLeod, Wiles and Hardwick. Nordgreen converted two and kicked two penalty goals, and Clarke converted one try. Holland scored for Wellington, and L. Hemi kicked two penalty goals. Mr J. O'Shannessey was referee

ASSOCIATION GAMES SERVICES' TEAMS DRAW North Shore dominated play in the main Soccer game at Blandford Park against Comrades on Saturday afternoon to win 4 —o, Richards adding three goals to hie tally. Bright play was seen in the oarly game between Eastern Suburbs and Ardmore in which Suburbs won by the odd goal in five. A. keen encounter at Devonport between Whenuapai (winner of the first round) and Philomel, resulted in a division of the points. From the outset of the North Shore-Com-rades game it was apparent that the former team had been well drilled in positional play, the halfbacks. Dacre, Danby and Christie, seldom wasting a pass, while tho attacks found tho two wing Robinson and Mason, ever in position. As a result Richards, in the centre, was able to score twice in the first 15 minutes. The inside men. West and Rasmussen. continued to make openings and harassed the Comrades defence where McCamish (goal) earned applause for good saves. In the early game the bulk of the Suburbs' play was made by the wingers, Walsham and Colling, when it was seen bv the half-line that .Ardmore had Welch (centre) covered. The Ardmore half-line worked hard and made several good openings for those in front, where Webster and Gisby were prominent. Following were the scores and scorers:—• North Shorp. -I (Richards 3, Robinson), Comrades, 0; Eastern Suburbs, 3 (Collings 2, Welch), Ardmore, 2 (Gisby, Webster): Whenuapai, 2 (Bell.
