HAMILTON BY-ELECTION MR NASH ON RESULT THE DEFEAT OF LABOUR "The result of the Hamilton byelection is the normal reaction to nearly six years of war, with irs controls, restrictions, shortage of goods, rationing, lack of houses, ballots, uncertainties and anxieties of parents, relatives and the men themselves.' said the aeting-Brime Minister, Mr Nash, in the Labour paper the Standard. Controls, particularly directions to employment, were annoying to those affected by them, he said. As the need for the controls passed with the changing war situation, the resentments which they inevitably created would pass and the beneficial legislation of the past ten years would bring its results. Benefits which had never been experienced were not missed, but the danger of their loss, when fully realised, might bring another outlook. "It js also true that the struggle to achieve brings inspiration and encouragement when results come," continued Mr Nash. "It may be that conditions obtained without eflort have brought a false complacency that will vanish when the restrictions of war are also past. It simply means that you cannot have war without paying tor it by deprivation of those things that would have been available but for war conditons. I suppose there is nothing more annoying than to have the money to buy what; you have always wanted and then to find that what you want is not available for pun-base." POSSESSED REVOLVER LABOURER'S OFFENCE DISCOVERY BY POLICE sequel to the capture of two men in the Invincible Cash Store, Glen Eden, in the earlv hours of April 16. was heard before Mr J. H. Lux ford, S.M., yesterday when one of the men, Richard Arthur de Thierry, aged 31, labourer, pleaded guilty to having a revolver and ammunition in his possession. After lie Thierry had boon arrested, n si-arcli was made of a room be occupied in the cit.v, said Detective-Sergeant Aplin. The revolver and six rounds to »il the revolver were found in the room. When questioned, accused stated that lie had found the gun and the ammunition in his room some time previously. "Accused is serving a sentence ol .wo years with hard labour, said Mr Aplin, "The fact that a person of accused's known character should be in possession o| a dangerous weapon of this class is rcga rded :is .serious.'' Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. IMPORT RESTRICTIONS CLOTHING WORKERS' VIEW "The male section of the workers in the clothing industry views with alarm the incessant sniping by importers and retailers at the import control, as exemplified hv the report of a meeting of the New Zealand Retailers' Federation in Wellington," said a statement issued by Mr I). Bropliv, secretary of the workers' organisations representing Auckland cutters, trimmers, pressors, tailors and hatters. Mr Brophy said the clothing workers were of the opinion that it was vital to the people's welfare that the import restrictions be rigidly maintained. The problem of the future would he the equitable distribution of purchasing power through wages, and there could he no greater threat to this than the relaxing of the import restrictions, thereby creating unemployment and a slump.
