ELLEBSLIE TRAINING GOOD DISPLAYS OF JUMPING BY, ARCHER Excellent jumping over country by Sir Percy, Albino, New Battle, Roman Orator and Valantua, and over hurdles by Hunto, Brantome, Gold Cape and Sporting Gold, was a feature of the i training operations at Ellerslie yesterday in preparation for the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, which opens on Saturday. On the Hat, Verdant and Tiger Tan ran the best halfmiles, Nawab, Kentish and Rnra Avis went well over five furlongs, and Gay Chat rail a good six furlongs. The steeplechase course, hurdles on the outside of the course proper, and the schooling hurdles in the middle were available for the jumpers, and the No. 1 grass, where the poles were out sft, was used for galloping. The ground was very wet and heavy, and there were a couple of showers while the work was in progress. Sir Percy (Boyle) and Albino (Heasley) were seen to bettor advantage than Epping (Temperton) over a round of the steeplechase course, starting from the fence near the sevenfurlong post. Sir Percy and Albino jumped the double in the middle, whereas. Epping went over the water-jump. Sir Percy and Albino went attractively, but Epping was a little slovenly at a couple of the fences, being outjumped at the second along the back and at the first on the hill. Except for the two fences mentioned. Epping also jumped well. These | three horsen are likely to ho among the fuvI ourites for Ibe Great Northern Steeplechase. I The way they have schooled has certainly been I encouraging. Valantua and Rival Classic (Williamson) and Lapidarian (Haln) ! did a round of the steeplechase fences in good , style. They wero followed by Valantua (Thorn- : son). Rival (Sinton), Auld Mackay (Coon) and Extra (Smith). Valantua and Rival wont very well, especially the former. Auld Mackay and Extra went carefully and jumped safely. Roman Orator (Sinton) went alone over a round of the steeplechase course and jumped nicely throughout. He is carrying an improved j appearance, and seems to be a reliable and - quick fencer. New Battle (Williamson) was well in front- of Colonel Bins (Baker) after giving a fine display over a round of the steeplechase course, i Over hurdler on the outside of the course proper, Maggiore (Hawes) finished well clear of Kilnianagn (Temperton). who was not bustled. After clearing four hurdles, Maggiore ! jumped cleanly and quickly. She has trained on well since running unplaced in the Hamilton Hurdles. Takrouna (Bishop) began with Maggiore, but fell at <iie first fence. She jnmped round carefully after being remounted. Gold Cape (Brady) led Captain Bell (Smith) over four flights. He gave a clever display. Hunto (Winder) beat Good Armour (Hain) and Shepherd's Mate (Howard) over a round of five hurdles. Hunto looks a pictnre, and his effort was highly pleasing. Good Armour performed very creditably. Brantome Brilliant Brantome (Brady) gave a dashing display in leading Expellant (Coon) over four hurdles. He went into his fences with plenty of confidence and jumped boldly and cleanly. Expellant also went satisfactorily, although overshadowed by the brilliance of Brantome. Slavonic (Chaplin) finished in front of Brief (W. Anderson) and Bushcraft (Dowrick) at j the completion of a round over five Vhurdles. Sporting Nation (Kerr) went with them to the third fence, where she 'fell. She was remounted and jumped the remaining fences safely. Slavonic made a creditable showing. Foxsen (Mcßae) and Good Fun (Chaplin) jumped well over four hurdles, keeping together throughout. Sporting Gold (Coon) and Kanui te Pai (Williamson) were better than Ascot Bloom (Brown) in a round over five hurdles. Sporting Gold went very well for a horse in his class, being- in front early and keeping with Kanui te Pai over the last half-mile. Kanui te Pai j umiied cleverly. Ascot Bloom went satisfactorily. although he hit one fence very hard. Moderate (Heasley) was allowed to go carefully over four hurdles and made no mistake. Sir Kingman (Ritchie) and British Patrol (Sinton) went in good style over four of the schooling hurdles in the middle. They afterwards Jumped the steeplechase fences on the flat. Sir Ringman fencing quickly and giving the better display. The Dude (Bailey) Jumped two hurdles cleanly, and afterwards did strong ; work on the sand. Red Sign (Brown) gave a good display over the steeplechase fences on • the flat. Gallops on Grass On the grans. Verdant (Giblw) was responsible for the best half-mile by recording 61 3-se. Verdant galloped very freely. Like i other members of his family, he handles heavy ; going particularly well. Tiger Tan (Pitman) also went pleasingly over half a mile, easily beating Ra Ora (Chaplin) in 51 4-ss. Tiger Tan carried more weight than Verdant, and ; his effort was pleasing. Tiger Tan is very fit. S St. Leon ran four furlongs smoothly in 54 3-ss. : Prince Revel (Anderson) recorded 52 4-ss, and Saffron Walden. going comfortably. 55 l-ss. Colonel Dink beat Rarnpede in 535. Pedro ran 50 4-ss. and Fight On 555. Royal I Greek <T Green) and ReOrapa (Bishop) were jon terms after running 535, Royal Greek covering a fair amount of ground on the outside. Frenesi beat Rina Light and Toiling Teddy in 51 2-ss. Red Warden.took 57 4-Ss. Nawab (Bagb.v) and Kentish (Wiggins) ran the best live furlongs when they recorded 1.7 2-5. Nawab held a slight advantage early, but Kentish moved up on the outside to be on terms as they came into the straight. Nawab went on strongly in the last furlong and finished slightly in front. Rara Avis (Jlllings) also went well over five furlongs, which he covered in 1.7 -1-5. Tuis and Chung Chong also went nicely to record 1.9. They were together at the end and finished strongly. Other gallops over five furlongs were:—Scotch Tweed, 1.11 1-5; Chaka. 1.10; The Fake, 1.14; Broiedame. 1.10; Lysander's Last beat Lustnore and Master Robert: 1.10 3-5; Great Pleasure easily beat Superb. 1.10 1-5; Yes Tor beat Leigh Hark. 1.10; Felix Street and Killfast. 1.10 1-5. Gay Chat's Good Six Gay Chat (Gibbs) went very freely to complete six furlongs in 1.20 2-5. He is a good track worker, whose form in public has not reached expectations. Gay Chat is very fit. Royal Ductless (Jillings), assisted earl.v by Cu-na-mara arid over the last three by Skateaway, finished strongly to complete six furlongs in 1,22 1-5. Sir Dingle (Anderson) was timed to run six furlongs in 1.24 1-5, upon which he could have improved. Vallev Bov was about four lengths in front of Flying Tor after completing six furlongs In 1.21 2-5. Valley Boy went well. Flying Tor was eased a little toward the finish. Sir Leon (Bagb.v), after running the first three in 40 4-ss. completed six furlongs In 1.23 2-5, Embasev ran 1.24 4-5. British Talent beat Our Gold In 1.24 1-5. Cowp«r (Wiggins), assisted over the last Ave by Sir Desmond, completed seven furlongs in 1.30 3-5. the last six in 1.23 2-5. Theolateral (T. Green) and British Mint (Bagb.v) were Just In front of Hormuz after completing seven furlongs in 1,38. Theolatera! and British Mint both went very freely and could have done a little better at the finish. Hormuz ran on strongly at the end, and made up most of the few lengths he was behind in the early stages. Sir Dink, on the sand, ran seven furlongs in 1.33 2-5. Ramillies, finishing strongly, was slightly better than The Vulture over a round in 2.8. A change of riding arrangements has been made for Ramillies in the Great Northern 1 Hurdles, and it is now announced that J. Williamson will be his pilot. Ramillies has had a good preparation and looks well. Spanish Main did a working gallop, which was followed with steady pacing on the sand. Dauber covered a round in 2.13, going evenly throughout. He is Improving in condition. % Immediate and Gulf Stream beat Capronella over seven furlongs, but were not timed. Findnn was restricted to trotting on the sand. Rockery was another who, worked on the sand and he did strong work. Indian Sign also went steadily. Flying Spy was not noticed on the track. TAKANINI DOINGS WORK ON HEAVY TRACK Conditions were unpleasant at Takanini yesterday when horses engaged at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting on Saturday and Monday were given their semifinal gallops. The track was heavy. One of the best gallops was that of Cambria and Yorkish over six furlongs, which they covered in 1.22. Both horses revelled in their work. Sousa and La Fillette ran the same distance in 1.24 2-5. There was nothing between them at the finish. Sleepy Fox was sent seven furlongs and, galloping in good style, recorded 1.30 3-5. He ran the first three in 38 3-5«. Foxlore. who has been working well, was running on at the end of six furlongs, which he left behind in 1,24 2-5. Peter Gregor and Park Roval returned the best figures. 1.8 1-5. for five furlongs. Peter Gregor appears to be regaining form. Over the same journey Kronos registered 1.8 2-5. Lady Adornment went freely over three furlongs in 30 2-.">s. Regal March, who lias done well since racing at Te Rapa, held Royal Merit at the end of five furlongs run in 1.8 2-5. Callinan sprinted four furlongs in 555. Although she has not won since the Auckland meeting on Anniversary Day, Callinan has performed well on the track. Old Scot, who galloped resolutely, covered four furlongs in 54 4-5«. Waiting was not hurried while running the same distance in 58 1 -ss. Beau Siri was going comfortably alongside Gay Joy over five furlongs in 1.10 1-5. TRIP CANCELLED (0.C.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Dividend is missing from the acceptances for the Churchill Steeplechase at Wanganui on Saturday. He did not make the recovery expected from his recent lameness and the northern trip had to be cancelled. It is hoped that he may be able to race at some of th# 1 later winter meetings. •
