Features of the ANNUAL REPORT For the Year Ended December 31, 1944 Marked by substantial progress in all departments the year 1944 formed another milestone in the history of this great Mutual Life Office. NEW BUSINESS: During the year New Policies were issued auguring over FOURTEEN MILLION POUNDS. TOTAL INCOME of the Society exceeded SIX AND A HALF MILLION POUNDS, PAYMENTS TO POLICYHOLDERS during the year totalled £2 62 1,5 38, making the total of such payments since the inception of the Society over FORTY-TWO MILLION POUNDS. WAR CLAIMS: Since the outbreak of hostilities the Society has paid in claims directly due to war service over £67 5,000. WAR LOANS: In furtherance of its policy of supporting the war effort, to the utmost extent, the Society in 1944 subscribed to War Loans throughout the Empire no less than 90 PER CENT OF THE INCREASE IN ITS FUNDS. EXPENSES of Management, notwithstanding high price levels, showed further substantial reductions in all departments. CONTINGENCY RESERVES, giving added security over and above Policy liabilities, were maintained at a high level. SURPLUS: The Society's Surplus for the year totalled £1,387,532.
