EPSOM WEDDING

HEBBEND—HIPKINS The marriage took place at the Gardner Road Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon of Miss Margaret Whyte Hipkins, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Hipkins, of 58 Gillies Avenue, Epsom, to Mr Alfred Clifford Hebbend (ex-N.Z.E.F.), younger son of Mrs M* Hebbend, of St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell. The Rev. J. W. McKenzie officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a lovely gown of ivory pebble crepe, made with a draped bodice and bustle back. The gathered skirt had a train, and the embroidered tulle veil was held by a coronet of orange blossom. A shower bouquet of white roses, chrysanthemums and gladioli was carried.

In attendance as bridesmaids were the Misses Nancy Hipkins and Joan Gill, who wore frocks of duck-egg blue faconne. The square necklines were trimmed with folds of the material, which were repeated at the waist, and the skirts were full. Their bouquets were of roses, gladioli and chrysanthemums in autumn shades. The best man was Mr R. Mackesy, and the groomsman Mr H. Mouatt, both of whom served with the bridegroom in the Middle East.

The reception after the ceremony was held at the home of the bride's parents.

CEREMONY AT GORDONTON

HUMPHREY—CARS WELL The wedding took place recently at St. Mary's Church, Gordonton, of Miss Mercia Gladys (Rellie) Carswell. daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Carswell, Piako Road, Gordonton, to Mr William Henry Humphrey, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Humphrey, of Tauranga, The Rev. N. J. Williams officiated. The hride, who was given away by her father, wore a charming slimfitting trained gown of ivory satin, made with a V-shaped neckline. Her embroidered tulle veil fell from a coronet of orange-blossom, and she carried a bouquet of ivory cactus dahlias, crocus and roses. The three bridesmaids were Miss Hazel Humphrey, of Auckland, sister of the bridegroom, Miss Pam Nolan, of Devonport, cousin of the bride, and.Miss Peg. Laidlaw, of Gordonton, cousin of the bride. They were dressed alike in frocks of satin-backed sheer in three different shades of delphinium blue, made with sweetheart necklines, fitting bodices and very full skirts. Their blue Juliet caps were held in place by a spray of clover-coloured flowers to match their shower bouquets. The best man was Mr J. P. Ryan and Mr J. Humphrey and Mr A. Carswell acted as groomsmen.

After the ceremony a reception was held at the Gordonton Hall.

PLUNKET WORK

CONFERENCE REVIEWED A brief outline of matters dealt with by the Dominion Council of the Plunket Society at the recent conference in Christchurch was given by Mrs R. P. Towle, president of the Auckland branch of the society, at the monthly committee meeting yesterday. It was stated that both Dr Helen Deenr, medical adviser, and Miss N. Fitzgibbon, nursing adviser to the council, had stressed the great importance of the work with the pre-schoo! child. What already had been accomplished in this sphere emphasised the great need there was for more intensive work in this group. Many pre-school children did not have enough sleep and rest during the day, and had insufficient milk to drink. Branches were urged to intensify and extend their work m this department. The report of the work carried out from headquarters was read by the charge nurse, Miss H. A. Chapman, and the activities at the Trubv King Karitane Hospital were outlined by Miss S. Lusk. Miss Lusk expressed her appreciation of the support She had received from the committee, hospital and district staff while at Karitane. Miss W. M. Slater, who has been sub-matron of the Karitane Hospital for the past five years, has been appointed successor to Miss Lusk, and was welcomed by the committee. A donation of £ls to the hospital funds from the Karapiro District Plunket Society was acknowledged.

OLDEST IN DOMINION

ONEHUNGA ORGANISATION The oldest organisation of its kind in j the Dominion, the Onehunga Ladies' j Benevolent Society, held its 82nd annual I meeting yesterday, the Mayor, Mr A. 1 Garside, persiding over a large attend- j ance. The society was established in : 1863 as an outcome of the Maori War ] to provide accommodation, food and refuge for the hundreds of people who swarmed into Onehunga from the shores of the .Manukau.

The annual report showed that those in need of help in past years were now in many cases enjoying much better circumstances and this year had, therefore, been a lighter one than usual for the society. Help given to families included 312 weekly grocery orders,- 520 weekly milk orders and a number of parcels of clothing.

MEDAL AWARDED

| WORK AMONG SCOUTS The award of the Boy Scouts' Association's Medal of Merit has been made by His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir Cyril Xown 11. acting in his capacity as Dominion Chief Scout to Mrs Hazel Addis, of Auckland, for'her good services to the Scout movement. Although Mrs Addis was a member of the training staff of Gihvell Park, England, for several years it is more particularly the work she has done for the movement during her few years' stay in New Zealand that has prompted this award being made. Largely at the instigation of Mrs Addis, there are nearly H)() small boys enjoying the pleasures and privileges of the Lone Cub branch. Apart Iron) this service sim has assisted with the running of various training courses throughout New Zealand.
