JUMPERS AT HAWERA WIN OF MASTER MERUIT FOXIANA PULLS UP LAME (0.c.) WELLINGTON, Monday Master Meruit, winner of the Egmont Steeplechase, is not encaged in the main jumping events at the Waikato meeting nor in the Great Northerns. He gave a good display at Han-era, jumping cleanly and coming away at the right end to win with plenty in hand. He was more seasoned with racing than most of his opponents and this plaved a prominent part in his success. Master Meruit is an ideal type of steeplechaser, being heavily boned and having plenty of size. He is a six-year-old gelding by, Master Colossus from Meruit, who was by Cynic. Master Colossus was by Colossus from Inaki, by Multified. It is a plain pedigree which combines jumping and staying blood. Master Meruit is raced by Mr H. H. Dods, of Gisborne, and is trained at Hastings by W. D. Young. Foxiana pulled up lame at the finish of the Egmont Steeplechase. The lameness was not bad enough to dismiss the possibility of his being raced again. He jumped to' the front at the fourth fence and led for almost the remaining two miles. Except for two fences which he did not measure well, he gave a good display of jumping, and submitted only at the last fence, where Master Meruit took his measure. The full effect of his lameness may not be known for a day or two. In the meantime his winter programme is in doubt. No horse is likely to derive more benefit from his race in the Egmont Steeplechase than Khurja and rapid improvement can be expected from him. Khurja jumped without error, but his condition failed and he was not ilfiduly pressed over the last two furlongs. He would have been a closer third had he not been almost run off the course approaching the third to last fence. Khurja's next start will be in the Te Rapa Steeplechase at the Waikato meeting this week. Although he had taken off a good deal of flesh between the Hawke's Bay meeting last month and the Egmont meeting on Saturday, Indian Sun still looked as if a race or two would be beneficial to him. In the circumstances he ran satisfactorily to finish fourth in the Egmont Steeplechase. Indian Sun showed promise when put to cross-country racing two seasons ago, and if he stands up to training he should not go through the current season unsuccessfully. Taane Pango had his first run as a steeplechaser in the Egmont Steeplechase, bat he failed to complete the course, coming down at an easy fence at the completion of the first round. Up till then he had jumped all right, although somewhat carefully. He is the lean type who carries very little condition and may need a good deal of experience before he distinguishes himself in this role. The former Southlander Minton, who was bought recently by Mr T. Coltman, of Wellington. gave as good a display of fencing as any of the runners in the Egmont Steeplechase, but he tired with half a mile still to run. Although he finished fifth, he was a long way from the winner. Minton jumps well enough to win a minor steeplechase, but is not likely to be set against the best in this class. Kanui te Pai ran on the flat at Hawera. He contested the Mcßae Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, and finished fourth, making up good deal of ground from the five furlongs. Kanui te Pai has been in work since the summer and commenced racing at the Manawatu March meeting. The four races he has had have conditioned Jiim for coming engagements. Although he is set to carry big weights, he should run prominently in the north.

LA FILLETTE'S WIN EARNINGS REACH £lOls La Fillette's win in the Makaraka Handicap at Te Aroha last Satnrday brings her stake-earnings to £lOls. She handled the heavy going exceptionally well and scored very decisively from Foxlore and Llanarth. La Fillette is a five-year-old brown mare bv Vaals from Nassau Ladv, by Nassau, sire o*f Starland, an Auckland Cup winner, and the good racehorse and sire Surveyor. La Fillette is a full-sister to Fils de Vaals. who won the Summer Cup at Elierslie and ran second in the Takapuna Cup in the 1989-40 season. A brown colt by Bailoch from Nassau Lady and therefore a half-brother to La Fillette was sold at the last Trentham yearling sales in January for 1400 guineas. SUCCESSFUL DEBUT SYLIS WINS AT TE AROHA The three-year-old Sylis made a successful debut when he won the First Trial Handicap at Te Aroha last Saturday, holding on solidly at the end and scoring by a length and a-quarier from Tin Musk, who also finished well. Sylis is a brown gelding by Baffles, a half-brother to the Derby winner Manna, whose earnings on the turf amounted to £23,534. He is from Sand-drift, a mare bv Sandstar from Hyneta, and is the first of his dam's stock to race.

GOOD PACING FILLY RECORD OF JOSIE DELL The three-year-old pacing filly Josie Dell is the leading stake-winner for horses of her age in New Zealand trotting: this season with £1387 10s, the result of four firsts, two seconds and a third. Josie Dell was third to Air Marshal and Worthy Gold in the New Zealand Trotting Derby Stakes, going 3.22 3-5, and won the Great Northern Trotting Derhy. Last month Josie Dell won the United Nations Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club's Patriotic Meeting in 3.24 2-5, and at the autumn meeting a week later beat a good field in the April Handicap, recording 3.19 from a 3.29 mark. Her last start was in the President's Handicap, two miles, at Claudelands, in which she was unplaced after leading for a little over a mile and a-half on a very heavy track. Josie Dell is by the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Josedale CVrattan, 2.2, from Del Potts, by Jack Potts from Delco, by Author Dillon from Ellawood. by Driftwood from an Irvington mare. Breeding suggests that she is likely to prove a good stayer as she matures. TO CORRESPONDENTS " Clocked," Thames.—Flying Ace was withdrawn from the Okawa Handicap at 9.40 a.m. on April IS. The race was run at Hastings on April 21.
