HOSPITAL PLANS

AUCKLAND NEEDS DEPARTMENT'S VIEWS CONSIDERATION BY BOABD Proposals for extensions and actions to the Auckland Hospital V submitted for consideration bv Auckland Hospital Board at a mL+last night by the Director-General 1 \ Health, Dr M. H. Watt. HeLf that the proposals, which should not k! regarded as final in all respects' Minist " * ' A new ward block and a new serrir, block should be built at the hosS said Dr Watt. The total number yrf beds on the main site should be 600 including those in present buildiJ' which would continue to house patient but if the military block .was to £ administered separately,' the tot I might he increased to 750.

it was suggested that the existine main block should become an adraini trative and lecture-room block It h'j not lend itself to extensive alterations Ihe present kitchen was not adeotia?: even for the reduced number of bert and a new kitchen should be platm*] in or near the new services block. Future ol Other Blocks It was recommended that tha TT.'i lace Block should make at least additional floor available to the Dath ology department. The remainder could provide for eye, ear, nose and throat cases, with ancillary outpatient ac<W modation. The Costlev Block if it ifj not interfere with new building should remain and it might be possihV to subdivide it for nurses' or maid< accommodation. The infectious diseases block should also be retained for that purpose Ti, u Princess Mary Block should be used 5 a massage and physiotherapy unit ami the soldiers' block should revert to£ originally-intended use as a children's hospital. Orthopaedic children and non pulmonary tuberculosis cases should en to Middlemore. Wards 11 and 12 should be demolished. It would appear desirable that the proposed obstetric and gynaecological block should be included in the main Auckland site. It would still be necessary, to add to the nurses' home, but if it was possible to use the Costlev Block for accommodation and the main block for lecture-rooms, the additions would not be as extensive as at first contemplated. Green Lane and Middlemore Green Lane should remain as a chronic hospital, said l)r Watt. Th' e Minister and the department agreed that the 270-bed chest hospital at Claude Road, Epsom, as planned, should be proceeded with as soon as possible. The proposed southern block at Green Lane could be completed at an early date to provide the necessary services for the existing western wing. The eastern wing should be completed when it was possible to demolish other buildings on the grounds. Middlemore should be the acute hospital for the South Auckland area, but in the meantime should be the orthopaedic hospital for the whole area, and should be extended by 60, or possibly 120. beds. The planned housing scheme at Tamaki would largelv- increase the demand. "It is the view of the department that land should be acquired in the Avondale district to provide for possible extensions in this area," continued Dr Watt. A new general hospital with about 300 beds and provision for extensions should be contemplated in that district. The department had already indicated its approval of a 50bed hospital at North Shore as planned. The matter was referred to the standing committee for administration and for future hospital planning.
