GOLF CONTESTS

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP I OTAHUHU SEATS MANUKAU There was a large attendance at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon to, witness two splendidly contested tames in the fifth series of matches controlled by tho Auckland Rugby League. A feature at headquarters on Saturday was the spectacular V for Victory fomiation by the four senior teams, and. in resporisp to a message by the chairman, Mr J.'W, Watson, the crowd stood in silence in memory of sportsmen who had sriven their lives in the war The Auckland Waterside Workers' Band played the American and British national anthems. Rain fell, late in the afternoon, but it did not seriously interfere with the standard of play. In (lie principal match Otahuliu revealed superior teamwork to comfortably defeat Manukau and thus take the lead in ttie championship. In a well-contested curtaiu-raiser, Ponsonby beat Marist in an exciting struggle over the last five minutes. On No. '2 ground City narrowly beat Richmond in the last few minutes, while North Shore won from Newton. .Mount Albert proved too stood for Point Chevalier at Walker Park. Results were: — Otahuhu, 4 JO; Manukau, 8. Ponsonby, 8- Marist, 7. City, U: Kiclimond. 5. North Shore, K>; Newton, 2. Mount Albert, IS; Point Chevalier, 7. The first :tO minutes of the game between i Otahuhu and Manukau provided spectators ■ with u good standard of play and there was i little to choose between the teams. Several instances of weak handling by the Manukau backs cost tries in the first spell, and Otahuhu led by 8 points to o at hall'tinie. A fine try by R. Speedy (Otahuhu) changed the whole complexion of the game. Superior team work from then on favoured Otahuhu. Time and again Ririnui led the Manukau forwards, but the Otahuhu defence was equal to the occasion, and the attacks were frustrated. A rather lucky try by M. Johnson, who followed up a kick at tfoal, placed the game beyond doubt. , Otahuhu deserved its victory. Manukau was not so strong as usual. Butler, moved to fullback, played an oustanding name. Seymour, the Otahuhu fullback, suffered in con); parison. Brady on the wing. played a splendid name and contributed nine of the '2O points scored by Otahuhu. R. Speedy, five-eighths, was brilliant at times on attack and was the most impressive of the backs. Riley also , played well, although he mishandled on, occasions. J. Speedy gave fine service at halfback. Among the forwards, Fogarty, N. and .1. Johnson, were splendid workers. Murray was always dangerous in the Manukau backs, i while Ririnui. Te Tai and Rogers excelled ' among the forwards. ' The final ten minutes between Ponsonby and Marist provided excitement and two re- ; markabie goals changed the fortunes. A spectacular field goal by Anderson placed ; Marist one point ahead with five minutes left ; to plav.' Just before time Nordgren had a penalty shot from 40 yards out and sent the! ball over the crossbar amidst applause. Pon- i sonby would have been unlucky to have been ! beaten, as Nordgren got over twice only to lose the slippery ball in tackles. , ; The scorers were: Otahuhu, !20 (tries by j Riley, R. Speedy. M. Johnson and Brady, i Brady converting two and kicking a penalty ; goal, and Riley converting one try). Manuknu, i S (tries by Pai and Te Tai and a penalty ! goal by Butler); Ponsonby, 8 (four penalty i goals by Nordgren), Marist. 7 (try by Smith and penalty goal and field goal by Anderson); North Shore, 15 (tries by Read, Chatham arid Rutherford. Clarke converting two and kicking a penalty goal), Newton '2 (penalty goal by Siiva); City, 9 (try by McGee and three penalty goals by Silva). Richmond, 5 (try by McGregor and penalty goal by Lowther).
