RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

14 ENTRIES RECEIVED

The management committee of the Auckland Rugby Union last evening received an entry of 14 teams for the first division championship this season, one with no preference for either, and eight for the second division. The chairman, Mr C. L. Cherney, considered that at least one trial series should be played before a decision was made. There was no doubt that 14 teams were too many for tha first division. Tho new Aotea Club asked for the entry of a senior team in each division. The chairman said it was the policy of the union In the past not to accept two senior teams. Mr J. M. Graham said that the Aotea Club considered it had '25 players up to senior status.

Mr 0. S. Harvey thought the time might be opportune to have a senior first, second and reserve division again Mr L. S. Drake saw no reason why the entry of two teams from Aotea should not be accepted until the players had been seen in action.

The point was raised by tho chairman as to the value of a reserve division. Mr Harvey replied that it would bring a reduction of senior teams and finality in all sections. It was decided to accept all entries and to play at least one series of trial matches on April 28. The draw was left in the hands of the match committee.

Prior to tho commencement of business the chairman referred to the death of Mr F. Karl, K.C., 0.8. E., and Mr Carlton Hay. A vote of condolence was passed with their relatives and the meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect.

The following applications for reinstatement wero favourably recommended to tho New Zealand Union:—T. Trezise, N. Beazley,-A. A. Smith and T. T. Opal (through the Waikato Union), and two junior players, I. Mo Dermit and D. S. Tate. The colours of the Mount Roskill Club with jersey red, white and blue hoops, white shorts and black socks were approved Providing the affiliation of the Te Papapa Club was in order its application for an old gold jersey was approved A request was received from the new Normal Intermediate School for a donation of footballs. Mr E. York said that it was the policy of the Primary Schools' Union in tho past to give one ball to each established school. It was decided to donate two balls. A letter from the Otahuhu Club regarding improvements to the present insurance scheme was referred to the insurance committee for a report.

The application of the Thames Union for affiliation was approved. A request for eight footballs was granted. It was decided to favour the application for any senior team having a bye to play at Thames during the season. THE LEAGUE CODE TRANSFERENCE OF PLAYER SENIOR GRADE FIXTURES A great deal of discussion took place at last evening's meeting of the Auckland Rugby League in connection with a request for a transfer from the Richmond club to Ponsonby of G. Mitchell, the New Zealand representative forward. The chairman, Mr J. W. Watson, said Mitchell had not played League football since 1941, while in the armed forces he had played Rugby. He did not play in either code during the whole of last season. Mr R. H. Short, for the Ponsonby club, said a clearance was asked for from the Richmond club and it had been refused. This action, he contended, was contrary to the rules. Mr D. Wilkie said it would be a grave injustice to refuse a clearance to any player who had stood down for 12 months after a discharge from the forces. Mr W. R. Dick said the Richmond club desired Mitchell's services in the senior team. This had been offered to him at the start of the 1944 season. In answer to the chairman, Mitchell said he did not want to play for any club other than Ponsonby. Mr SVatson said the transfer rule was vague, as it did not apply to players who had served with the armed forces. After further argument it was decided to defer consideration of the matter until next meeting. A deputation from the senior officers' association raised the question of an alteration to the constitution dealing with the suspensions and disqualifications of players or officials. Mr G. Hunt outlined the case of officials and said that, according to the amended rule, there was no right of appeal against any decision the Auckland League may make. He added that the senior clubs did not have any opportunity of objecting to the proposed alterations. Other speakers of the deputation raised strong objection to the right of appeal by suspended persons. A reply to the deputation will be made at a laJer meeting. ' Mr Watson reported thai the gate takings at Carlaw Park last Saturday were the highest for the opening day for a number of years.
