TRIBUTES BY PROFESSION ADVOCATE AND CITIZEN There was a large attendance of members of the Bar in the Court yesterday when tributes were paid bv the Bench and Bar to the late Mr F. Earl, K.C. With Mr Justice Callan and Mr Justice Cornish on the Bench was Sir John Reed, K.C. The Magistracy was represented by Mr J. H. Luxford. : , The president of the Auckland District Law Society, Mr A. Milliken, referring to the 'Sftotable career of Mr Earl, said that had he not retired a| a comparatively early age he could hare.: attained an even greater eminence at the Bar. DETECTIVE'S PROMOTION Advice of his appointment to the, position of chief detective at Auckland* has been received by Senior-Detective J. Walsh. He has been attached to the detective office at Auckland since 1933. POST RELINQUISHED (0.C.) WHANGAREI, Tuesday Having been secretary of the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Whangarei since its inception in 1940, Mr 80110 Grey has relinquished the appointment and returned to the service or the Publio Trustee as solicitor to the Dunedin office. Before his appointment to the appeal board, Mr Grey was solicitor to the Public Trustee at Whangarei. Mr F. Smittr of the National Service Department, has been appointed secretary of the appeal board at Whangarei. DEAN APPOINTED (P-A.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday Bishop Fitchett today announced the appointment of the Ven. A. G. H. Button as Dean of Dunedin and Vicar of St. Paul's Cathedral district. The new dean was born at Lvttelton 59 years ago and was educated at the Christchurch Boys' High School. He received his training for the ministry at Selwvn College and was made deacon in 1912 and ordained priest in 1913. He served as assistant curate at St. Paul's Cathedral and was successively vicar of Lawrence, St. Peter's (Caversham). and Waikouaiti. He has been vicar of St. John's, Roslyn, since J. 940. HAMILTON ORPHANS' CLUB (0.C.) HAMILTON, Tuesday Many visitors from kindred clubs all over the province- were among those. , who attended the silver iubilee celebrations of the Hamilton Orphans' Club.
