RUGBY UNION PROBLEM

REINSTATEMENT OF PLAYERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The qnestion of the reinstatement of League players after the war who have heen granted a dispensation to play the Rugby Union game while serving with the forces was the prin cipal business dealt with by the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union at a meeting today. The chairman, Mr S. S. Dean, said the matter had been discussed more than once at executive meetings, but there had been diversity of opinion. He thought they had to adopt a fairly wide view and it was desirable that they should come tQ a decision in order that they could present a joint proposal with New South Wales to the English Ruby Union on the subject. Mr Dean eventually moved: "That this council approves of a general dispensation for all League players who have been or are members of the armed forces who desire to continue their association with our code, and that the New South Wales Union be informed and asked to join in representations to be made to the English Rugby Football, Union.'' The motion was carried. Mr A. A. Baker, president of the New Zealand Union, asked what action was to be taken concerning those league players who had reiurned from service overseas and had resumed playing League football as had already happened in Auckland. Mr Dean said he was anxious to avoid the trouble which arose in 191!), when the whole executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union had resigned. He pointed out that any dispensation which the union might grant would be subject to approval by the English Rugby Union. The matter was urgent and he suggested that they should cable the New South Wales Union and English Union on the matter.
