RISE OF MR HARRY TRUMAN
TYPICAL AMERICAN BACKGROUND Two outstanding facts in the life of Mr Harry S. Truman who, at 60, becomes the President of the United States, are that, next to Mr Roosevelt, he is held to be the American civilian who knows most about the war, and that as chairman of a Senate war investigating committee he spurred the Administration, the Army and the Navy to greater activity in prosecuting the war, overcoming shortages of material and eliminating waste. The new President has something of the log cabin background, stern application to the task in hand and a rise to fame by his own efforts including quickness in seizing the turn of fortune's wheel.
