SALE OF WINE FULL TAX NCIT PAID Fines totalling £325 were imposed on a winemaker, .Joe Ah Chan, of Totara, Thames, who appeared before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., yesterday, charged with four breaches of the Sales Tax Act. Mi .Rosen appeared for the collector of sales tax and defendant was represented by Mr Jensen. Mr Rosen said defendant was a licensed wineseller and had a vineyard outside Thames. The charges related to erroneous returns of sales of wine made by defendant in August, 1942, December, 1943, and January and April, 1944. It was alleged that there was a shortage of £'296 16s 6d in the taxes paid. Investigations of defendant's accounts showed that proper records had not been kept. Omissions and mistakes had been made in returns forwarded to the collector's department. For defendant, Mr Jensen said ha accepted two of the charges, but some of the figures in the other two charges were in doubt. All defendant's family shared in the business and neither the parents nor the children had any business training. There was a lack of coordination in the records of the business. Defendant did not realise how serious the matter was. Defendant was fined £IOO on the first charge and £75 on each of the other three charges. Four alternative charges of intent to defraud were withdrawn. OBITUARY MR A. W. MOUNTFQRT The death occurred recently of Mr Avmer Woolfield M mtfort, of Ohakune. Born in Christchurch S3 years ago, Mr Mountfort was educated at the Christchurch Grammar School. In his youth he was well known as a cricketer, playing for Christchurch and Wellington clubs. He represented Canterbury at Rugby football several times and toured the North Island in 1887. During the latter part of the last century he came to the North Island and was associated with surveying expeditions in the King Country. Later he was farming in the Kawhia district, and in 1923 he took up land at Ohakune. He is survived by- his wife, one daughter and two sons. MR W. D. WILSON The death has occurred of .Mr Walter David Wilson, atjed 73, of Auckland. Born at Auckland. Mr Wilson founded the firm of W. Wilson, Ltd., blacksmiths, engineers and welders, 53 years ago and was managing director at the time of his death. He was an enthusiastic yachtsman, being owner of the yachts Heartsease, Thelma and others. He was a life member of the Ponsoriby Cruising Club, of which he was commodore from 1904 to 1914. GISBORNE, Friday The Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows concluded its session in Gisborne with the election of tlio following officers: —Grand master, Mr A. L. Robb (Wanganui); deputygrand master, Mr W. Greenslade (Christchurch); immediate past grand master, Mr A. Wilson (Oamaru); grand warden, Mr R. R. Roseman (North Auckland); grand secretary, Mr R. Jenkins was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr Justice Callan yesterday, on the motion of Mr F. L. G. West. Dr J. F. Dawson has arrived in Hamilton from New Plymouth to assume his duties as district medical officer of health. His predecessor, Dr L. S. Davis, has left Hamilton to join the department in Auckland.
