ATTACK IN LATVIA
ENEMY LINES BREACHED GERMAN. AGENCY REPORT VRecd. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 25 The Russians have opened the third battle of Latvia, penetrating the German lines at several points, says the German news agency. It adds that tho Russians went over to the attack southwest and south of Frauenburg, on a 22-mile front, using 27 divisions, power-' fully supported by armour. A drumfire barrage of one and a-half hours, in which Red Army artillery slammed in 170,000 shells/ preceded the attack. The Berlin radio says that fighting has flared up on the East Prussian front, west of Suwalki and south of Stalluponen. coinciding with the opening of the Latvian offensive. The Exchange Telegraph's Moscow correspondent says that no official mention is made in Moscow of the progress of the Russian offensive against the German divisions trapped in the Baltic. The Russian press reports that the Germans are reinforcing these divisions and employing desperats measures to prevent desertions or retreat.
