BLACK MARKET SUPPLIED MANY AMERICANS ARRESTED (Reed. 5.35 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 24 Thousands of gallons of petrol intended for the Allied war machine have been stolen daily • and fed into the French black market, says the Associated Press correspondent in Paris. More than 1000 Americans are under arrest in a single detention barracks in Paris for misappropriation of Government property. Three officers and 181 men have been charged with stealing a trainload of cigarettes, soap and other supplies. The American provost-marshal stated that this group had sent home £50,000 worth of money orders, and each had the equivalent of £ISOO on his person when arrested.

GIANT BATTLESHIP (Rord. 5.,'15 p.m.) • LONDON, Dec. 21 Britain's new battleship launched recently is the world's largest capital ship, with a displacement of more than 45,000 tons, says the German news agency's naval correspondent. She is armed with nine 16in guns and is named Vanguard. The correspondent says the battleship will not be completed before 1916.
