TENNIS TOURNEY

HANDICAP EVENTS OVER 200 COMPETITORS Although weather conditions caused a delay of half a day on Saturday, when the Auckland Christmas handicap tennis tournament at Stanley Street commenced, good progress has been made, so that nearly half of the 250 matches in the ten events have been decided. A record entry of well over 200 competitors has made this tournament the largest for ten years and has attracted many wellknown, first-class performers, who include Miss E. G. Attwood (the Auckland 1042-43-44 intermediate champion). B. J. Baxter. T. -M. Butls, J (J. Rogan (runner-up to W. T. Fountney in 1040). W. Butler, 1. Thomson. M. Wakefield (Waikato). J. W. Stanley, G. Kerr-'laylor, Miss J. McL. Wallace irunner-up. Christmas 1011), Miss H. Redwood (winner of many titles), and Miss V. Johnson (Auckland junior champion). The St. Heliers Club player W. E. Butler was responsible for a good performance in eliminating D. G. Kelly (runner-up to B. Broun in the Auckland championships, 1.042), in straight sets, after allowing him a point in every game. M. Wakefield overwhelmed S. J. Robinson, (i—o 6 —3. in the first round from a similar handicap. T. M. Butts and A. W. Tills fought a torrid three sets, the former just winning, having a slight advantage on handicap. 11. Kinir beat W. lluckstep in the first round, but later found J. C. Rogan, the Takarmna star (just returned from overseas), too strong and lost, (i—2. o—3. both players being off (lie same mark. ,T. C. Rogers l>eat J. W. Stanley, 7—5, in the third set, in a match which thrilled the large gallery. The back-marker in the ladies' singles. Miss Attwood, is playing magnificent tennis, having no trouble in eliminating Miss B. Burns and Miss S. Jenkins, afler allowing a point to the former and just a shade over two points each game to the latter. Miss Attwood made full use of her great points-winner, the spectacular volley drive, her opponents having no answer ss she repeatedly left them standing yards out of position. In the A section men's doubles, B. Broun and D. Kelly, lost to M. Wakefield and G. L. Wright, (last year's winners), after they had one set in and were leading s—o.5 —0. They had a number of match points in the second set, only lo lose the next six games and, finally, the third set, 7—5. a most remarkable result and a meritorious recovery by Wakefield and Wright. Wakefield is playing great tennis. In the B section. A. Parker neat P. Henehan in the men's singles after a three and a-half hours' duel, the final set goinar to 12—10.

YACHT RACING EVENT TO TAURANGA VICTORY FOR SPEEDWELL The annual ocean yacht race from Auckland to Tauranga started from the eastern tide deflector al 1.10 p.m. on Saturday, three boats. Speedwell, Mandalay and Pari, taking part. Speedwell wont over the finishing line at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour 12 minutes ahead of Mandalay. Peri was the only Tauranga representative, the other two contestants coming from Auckland. Speedwell won the race on a handicap of 13 minutes, Peri being placed second and Mandalay third. Peri had a start of two hours from Mandalay. The race was sailed in verv patchy weather. All the boats were becalmed off Capo Colville for several hours. In the meantime, Mandalay had sailed well off the coast, but at no timo during the race did she 6ight the other two contestants. Off Mercury Bay Peri still held a slight lead from Speedwell, but the Auckland boat, which was splendidly handled throughout, gradually overhauled her Tauranga rival in the light airs, and eventually passed her off Slipper Island. From this stage onward, Speedwell never looked like being headed. As thoy approached Tauranga. the three boats were again almost becalmed. The finishing times were:—Speedwell (W.
