DEATH ON SERVICE AUCKLAND ARTILLERYMAN Reported to hare died of wounds during recent fighting in Italy, Bombardier Bob Dean, husband of Mrs M. r Dean, Phyllis Street, Mount Albert, was a well-known non-commissioned quartermaster in the New Zealand Field Artillery before going overseas early this year. A pre-war territorial, he served with the 21st Battery and the Ist Field "Regiment, and held the rank of warrant-officer before being transferred to the Middle East Forces. Born and educated in Burnley, Lancashire, England, Bombardier Dean, who was 35, was the third son of the late Mrs M. Dean, who came to New Zealand with her family in 1921. Before joining the Army he was a mils vendor in Mount Eden and served a period on the executive of the Milk Vendors' Association. Keenly interested in sport, he was an instructor in the Y.M.O.A. gymnasium and a foundation member of the Manukau Rovers' Tennis Club.
