AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

MORE ACTIVE MARKET

There was more activity on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, holders being more ready to accept the lowct levels lately ruling. This was particularly noticeable in the insurance section, where trading was freer than for some time. The demand for Bank of New Zealand shares was less keen, and they sold at 45s 6d, a drop of 3d. In the Government section the Victory Loan 2£ per cents had initial dealing at a discount of £3 17s 6d. Gains were recorded by Northern Steam, Dominion Breweries, N.Z. Newspapers and Woolnorths (Sydney).

GRAIN AND POTATOES THE ESTIMATED ACREAGES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Thursday The estimated areas of wheat, oats, barley and potatoes for the 1911-15 season aro published in the Gazette tonight. The total acreages sown last year were:—Wheat, 239,183; oats, 228.887; barley, .'50,310. The estimated acreages for this year are:—Wheat, 187.000; oats, 235.000; barley, 44,000. The lotal area planted in potatoes last season was 27,178 acres, and the estimated planting this year will be 31,500 acres. WIJAKATANE PAPER MILLS The accounts of Whakatane I'aper Mills. Ltd., for the year ended June 30 show net profit at £2592, after providing £ 47,390 for depreciation and £12,588 for taxation. This compares with a net profit of £40,474 for last year after providing £45,000 for depeciation and £25,000 for taxation. The net profit has been applied in further reduction of the debi; in the profit and loss account. Gross profit at C 132,970 is £ 19,852 less than last year, and gross sales at £531,340 represent an increase of £7978 on last year. The report states that the net financial results have been adversely influenced by the increase of £17,588 in provision for taxation. In addition, recoupment is awaited of the increased cost of-* raw material incurred during the year. These costs are at present the subject of consideration by the Price Tribunal. The directors stale that they look forward to the results of the current year finally recouping the company for its past losses and enabling consideration to be given to the position of the company's preference shareholders. The present burden of taxation, however makes it difficult during wartime to suggest any substantial contribution toward a settlement of past dividends. DIVIDENDS DECLARED Goldsbrougli Mort (Melbourne). —Interim dividend, 2 per cent (unchanged); payable December 20; books rloso December 5. Tooth and Co. (Sydney).—Final half-year, 6y 2 per cent; making 13 per cent for the ye;ir (last year 12 per cent); payable November 29.
