HOLIDAY WORK
DIRECTION OF STUDENTS
FEWER TEACHERS NEEDED Although all the Auckland University and Training College students who meet the requirements will be placed in work of national importance during the summer holidays, it is not likely that a big percentage of school teachers in the Auckland Education Board's district will be directed. Some of the students have already started work, and others will take up their duties during the next few weeks.
A survey of teachers in the Education Board's district, which was completed recently by the Auckland office of the National Service Department, showed that there were 69 men and 680 women in the categories required for work during the holidays. It was estimated that half of them were in the Auckland metropolitan area, and that some hundreds of male and female teachers, who were employed in other districts but had their homes in Auckland, would come to Auckland for the holidays. _ The district manpower officer, Mr U G. S. Ellis, said yesterday that it was not intended in the Auckland office of the department to direct the teachers whose nomes were in the Auckland district, and who worked in other areas. He,also said that it was not expected that many of the teachers who lived in Auckland would be directed to essential work. . .
About 1025 university and training college students would be used on essential work at varying times, and would be directed in preference „to school teachers, said Mr Ellis. The main reason for this policy was that the students were available for a longer period. Teachers would be called on[for the vacancies tliat could not be filled by the number of students available.
