'MEDITERRANEAN AREAS BRENNER PASS BRIDGES '(Reed. 5.35 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 13 Escorted heavy bombers of the United States Fifteenth Army Air Force yesterday attacked four railway bridges on the Brenner Pass lino in Northern Italy, states the Mediterranean air communique. Elsewhere aircraft of the Tactical Air Force attacked more military objectives in the battle areas and communication targets in the Po Valley. Coastal aircraft were active against shipping in the Adriatic, and the Balkan Air Force flew missions to Albania and, Yugoslavia, attacking transport communications and other targets. _ From these operations, involving about 1200 sorties, eight aircraft are missing.

Also they should- ask - Allied soldiers going the game way to serve as informal escorts. ; SHOT DOWN IN FRANCE V AIRMAN LOSES A LEG REPATRIATED NEW ZEALANDER '(Special Correspondent) LONDON, Nov. 13 "I just wanted to drop off to sleep," said Flying-Officer M. Sutherland, of Port Chalmers, describing his experiences when he was shot down over France by a Focke Wulf on August 22, 1943. Flying-Officer Sutherland, who had flown with the New Zealand Spitfire Squadron for 18 months, and had taken part in 50 sweeps,'was flying with the squadron that day when it went to the assistance of a Fighting French squadron, which was being attacked by 30 Focke Wulfs. The New Zealanders in turn were attacked by another 30 enemy planes and cannon shell went through the calf of Flying-Officer Sutherland's jright leg. His Spitfire was also damaged and petrol was leaking into the cockpit, hut he endeavoured to reach England. It was then that the Otago flier felt the desire to go to sleep, and he actually lost consciousness for a time. He camo to suddenly and decided to use his parachute immediately. He remembers falling and pulling the ripcord, but he then became unconscious again. He has. vague memories of being in two cars but says he did not fully recover until he was in Rouen Hospital two clays later. There he was well treated arid given a blood transfusion and his leg was amputated. Ho remained in Rouen until January, 1944, when he went to Germany. He was repatriated to England in September last. FlyingOfficer Sutherland will have an artificial limb affixed before returning to New Zealand. . Several New Zealanders are now serving in the communication squadron, flying "vips" (very important persons), between France, Belgium and Holland. They had ail previously done a tour of operations and they include Flightlieutenant C. P. Cowan (Whangarei), Flying-Officers E. J. Fry (Wellington), J. W. A. Johnston (Auckland) and H. G. Findlater (Dunedin), and PilotOfficers E. D. Moon and J. R. J. Bailey (Christchurch). Their work is not without risks,. While flying at 1000 ft over Holland in an Anson plane FlyingOfficer Fry was fired at by Germans. Flying-Officer Johnston has also been attacked while flying an Auster plane.
