BESEBVIST CHARGED ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT Arrested on Monday morning 0 „- ' yacht, following an exciting chase o* the Waitemata Harbour in which th° Navy, the police and military polW took part, a man appeared Messrs E. Smith and G. Goodwin J.P.'s, yesterday, charged with fail;,?' to report at the Drill Hall to proceS to camp. He was Olaf Phillip M art hf engo, projectionist, aged 27 (Mr Hoo ben). The prosecution was conductor! by Senior-Sergeant Sparks. pleaded guilty. 001150(1 Sergeant Gee, of the Army reco d department, said accused was called for' service in November, 1940, and was medically classed as grade 1. Appeal, were lodged on grounds of public in terest and conscientious objection but were later withdrawn. Accused' w B , ordered to report for service on \f o ! 7, 1941, but failed to do so . t8 authorities had been unable to locate him since. ■ Senior-Sergeant Sparks said the police had looked for accused during that period. The previous day word was received that he was trying to get away down the harbour* in a yacht The police gave chase and accused was brought back and arrested. Accused wished to express regret for any trouble he had caused the authorities, said counsel. His hobby was thd sea, and ho had endeavoured to enlist in the Navy, but was rejected because at one time he had suffered concussion He was then called by the Army and graded 1. He became annoyed at'beins passed by the Army and*rejected by the Navy, and vowed that he would not serve as a soldier. As time passed he saw that he had been foolish, but when it came-to giving himself up bi s courage failed him. He had been working steadly in the city erer since. A sentence of one month's imprisonment was passed.
