NAVAL AWARDS
TWO SERVICE CROSSES NEW ZEALAND OFFICERS (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Tuesday Advice has'been received from the Admiralty that the King has approved of the following awards to officers of tho Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve: — Distinguished Service Cross.—-Tem-porary-Lieutenant D. J. Glover, Christchurch; Temporary-Lieutenant J. F. Ingham (for good service in the invasion of Normandy). Mentioned in Despatches.—lempor-ary-Jjieutenant S. Prebble, Kamo; Temporary-Acting-Lieutenant R. M. Cramond, Australia; Temporary-Lieu-tenant H. M. Buchanan, Mntaura; Temporary-Sub-Lieutenant G. G. G. Gibbs (for good service in the invasion of Normandy), Taumarunui; Tempor-ary-Sub-Lieutenant J. S. Raper (for good service in action with light forces off Via Reggia, Italy), Featherston; Temporary-Sub-Lieu tenant D. P. B. Harding (for good service against enemy submarines), Feilding. Lieutenant Glover is a short-story writer. He has seen service in a destroyer on Arctic patrols and convoy work. Later, he volunteered for combined operations and was posted to a flotilla of special craft which landed commandos on D Day. Lieutenant Ingham was, in 1942, one of three New Zealand telegraphists who were at Courier Bay and Diega Snare/. Madagascar, during the occupation of that island. He was trained for cooperating with commandos. DEEP-SEA PORT (0.C.) WHANGAREI. Tuesday The Whangaroa Harbour Board today decided to take no action regarding an invitation to confer with five other boards on the question of selecting a deep-sea port for Northland. Whangaroa, although possessing a wonderful harbour had not the facilities for big ships and could not provide for them, said the chairman, Mr L. M. Lane. The choice would be between Whangarei and Opua, and he questioned whether a better service could be given from either than from Auckland. RENOWN MINE RESUMES (0.C.) HUNTLY, Tuesday Work was resumed this morning at the Renown mine, which was idle yesterday owing to heating in one of the sections. The sealing-off of the affected portion of the mine nas beea completed.
