LEAGUE FOOTBALL

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS OF CITY TEAM In a fast and open game. witnessed by one of the largest crowds this season. City bent Mount Albert by 17 points to 7 in the final of the Auckland Rugby League's senior championship at Curia w Park 011 Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal, the playing *rc«i being hard. City led at half-time by 5 points to 1. and dominated play in the second spell. This marks the first occasion since 1920 that City has won the senior honours. Two games in the Roope Rooster competition were also ' The City forwards soon settled down and it appeared early that they were too good for their opponents. Leatherbarrow won the bail from most of the set scrums, but bad handling by Cosscy checked several promising movements. Maluira. Jackson and Jones wire prominent among the City forwards in a swift attack from which Bodmau scored a good try. The Mount Albert backs could not settle down to play any constructive football, and it was only near the end of tlie game that they showed to advantage. Early in the second spell the game became more interesting and there were plenty of exciting incidents. A fino break-through by E. Donovan gave Cossey a chance and the City five-eighths scored the best try of the match. The Mount Albert puck adopted wrong tactics by failing to open up the play. The backs as a combination certainly had a day off, but it was a case of not being able to attack without possession of the ball. Good positional play by the City backs was a feature of the game. Matthews' last try came from superior speed and better handling. The best, of the City backs was A. Donovan, who varied liis i»lay well at back. His straight running greatly assisted the attack. After a bad start, Cossey improved at five-eighths, and Silva was outstanding in good tackling. Both the wings, Matthews and Taylor, were prominent on attack, and Ellis, at fullback, performed creditably, considering that he usually Plays in the forwards. A lot of credit for City S win goes to the forwards, who were fast in the loose and never allowed the Mount Albert backs to settle down. Mataira, Leatherbarrow and Jackson have no equal as a front-row combination. James. Hodman and Iv Donovan worked well throughout. Tries for City were .scored by Hodman, Cossey and Matthews. Silva converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal, and A. Donovan also kicked a penalty itoal. Jones scored for Mount Albert, and Clement kicked two penalty goals. Hoope Rooster Games. —North Shore, 14 (tries by McArthur, Taylor, Clarke converted both and kicking a penalty iroal. In the curtain-raiser at Blandford Park, between Auckland juniors and Taranaki representatives, Auckland won by six goals to two. Taranaki's weakness was in front of the goal. In the main attraction, between Naval Depot and Eastern Suburbs, play was fan! and exchanges even. Navy's defence was well tried in the first spell, when Pratt the goalie cleared well under pressure.
