FURTHER PROTESTS ACTION BY FARMERS Further protests by farmers 1 organisations against the compulsory use of serpentine superphosphate came before the Auckland District Council of Primary Production yesterday. It. was stated that from present deliveries some fanners had received their allocation in straight superphosphate, but it appeared to be a mere matter of chance where such allocations went. Unanimous agreement to support the Auckland council in the stand it was taking with regard to serpentine superphosphate was advised in a letter from the Rotorua District Council of Primary Production. This council stated that it had [ought the national council on the question for over 12 months, and still intended to do everything possible to have the matter adjusted. "The attitude of the authorities seems incomprehensible, as farmers arc not asking for more fertiliser, but lor the right to have the option of using straight superphosphate, stated the Rotorua council. It also pointed out the advantages of using straight superphosphate in reduced costs and less freight, which were officially admitted, because L ton 7 cwt of serpentine superphosphate wa* established as the equivalent of a ton of straight superphosphate. A further protest was received from Puui. where, it was stated, a meeting of oO fanners expressed concern that they could not use straight superphosphate. A resolution was forwarded from the meeting asking that farmers be given the right of the optional use of serpentine or straight superphosphate. Tho chairman, Mr R. C. Clark, said he was at a loss as to how to proceed without telling members what the position was as revealed in the minutes of the National Council of Primary Production. As a result the council decided to £<> into committee. Resuming in open council, a resolution was passed drawing the attention of the national council to the fact that the district council had again been

approached by farmers asking for the right of the - optional purchase of straight, superphosphate or serpentine superphosphate, with which the council concurred. Later in the meeting the council again went into committee to consider letters from the director of the fields division, .Mr P. W. Small field, regarding publicity given to the minutes of the national council meetings by the Auckland council and regarding the confidential nature of the minutes. A reply to the letters was adopted by the council in committee. LATENESS AT WORK REGULATIONS IN DOUBT LONDON, AUK- 2 Hendon magistrates refused to hear a case involving lateness at work because a representative of the Ministry of Labour could not give an assurance that the necessary regulations had been presented to Parliament. The case was adjourned for -8 days. The chairman of the Bench remarked: "As they make such a muck of things up there we shall ask in every one of these cases whether the 'laws' have been laid before Parliament. "A Minister of'the Crown has made a fearful blunder, and some departments are attempting to establish a dictatorship. This Court will not stand lor it. ] The comment followed a disclosure in the House of Commons last week by the Home Secretary, Mr Morrison, that by an oversight certain regulations made under the Fire Services (Emergency Provision) Act of 1941 had not been laid on the table of the House.
