FATALITY IN MINE EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST (0.C.) HUNTLY, Monday An inquest into the death of Mr John Currie, coal miner, aged 45, married, ol Huntly, who received fatal injuries while working in the Mac Donald mine on May 23, was held before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., at Huntly today. A verdict was returned that he died from shock following a fractured spine. Malvern John Mitchell said he was working with deceased on the day of the accident. Witness was clearing up coal and putting it into a .skip and deceased was trimming the roof after shots had been fired when he heard deceased call out. He then saw him lying on loose coal and he removed him out of danger. • George Watson, mine deputy, said deceased was a first-class coal miner with some 20 years' experience and Mitchell was being instructed by him. About 9.45 a.m. witness had fired two shots in deceased's working place, after which lie had made his usual examination and found the place safe. An examination of the place after the accident showed that while deceased was trimming the roof he struck a concealed slippy-back, which came away without warning, striking deceased in the back End forcing him on to the heap of coal. t Reginald Elugo Schoen, Government inspector of mines, said he inspected the place and found it to be well timbered with a six-foot roof of top coal. His inspection showed that it was pureh an accident and was not due to anv negligence.
