RUGBY SUCCESS

AUCKLAND TEAM WINS SERVICES FIFTEEN BEATEN The Auckland Rugby representatives maintained their unbeaten record this season by defeating Combined Services at Eden Park on Saturday by 24 points to !». Auckland was down 9—fi at half-time, but played much better in tho second spell to add IS points. Auckland registered si* tries, three of which were converted, to a potted goal and a converted try. Weather conditions, although dull, were fino and the ground was in good order. There was a large attendance. Gaining possession of the ball from the early scrums Services settled down more quickly than Auckland, whilo the Auckland rearguard had trouble in striking combination. This was due to M. N. x Paewai, first fiveeighths, who usually plays halfback, getting off tho mark too quickly and thus overrunning his passes from Tetztaff. In spite of the fact that early Tetzlaff threw two or three passes behind Paewai, the combination was not a happy one. There was a marked improvement in the second spell, but this may not. have been so apparent if the Services forwards had not tired. In the first spell tho Services pack had the better of the opposition, but on the whole the rearguard lucked penetration, although credit must be given for the sound defence of the Auckland harks. After tho interval Auckland commenced to throw the ball freely, with Wiles, who played a good all-round game at fullback, frequently joining in. In the early stages of the spell Auckland scored a couple of tries and held superiority until the final whistle. The Auckland wings, J. Dunn and It. Fox, caine well into the picture and each scored a couple of tries. Auckland's other two tries fell to M. McFlugh, who played a good all-round game in the Auckland pack, although he appeared to he offside the second time when he followed through a centre-kick by Paewai. J. Gilmour, who converted three tries, was also prominent in the Auckland forwards with W. Edwards, P. Fox and D. Christian. Services scored first about halfway through the opening spell when Warner potted a Tine goal from a fairly wide anglo about 40 yards out. The positional play of the fullback, however, who replaced T. R. Webster, could have been improved. Other defections in the Services team were D. R. Barchard, half, and Q. Shirley, back row forward, who were replaced by C. Brady and K. Smith respectively. Making his first appearance on the oval since he last played for Auckland in l!i:?0. Brady gave a polished display. He got the ball away smartly with well-directed passe and his all-round play showed that he

has lost little of his old-timo form. He scored a neat try on the blind sido after first going tho open way. This was converted by 13. Donaldson, who, usually a reliable placekicker, was not lip to form —otherwise seven or eight penalty goals might have gone to Services' total. There was no better forward on tho ground than H. F. Fraser, ono of the Services locks. Whether it was in the line-outs, tight, loose following up or tacking he was generally well to the fore. He was well supported by R. Spencc. B. Waldegrave and N. 11. Stacoy. Hooking honours between A. Johnson and D. Pike ended about even. Sound tackling frustrated many movements, but on the whole the game did not reach the spectacular heights anticipated. Mr R. K. Hayhow was referee.
