WARSAW BATTLE

POLES BEPEL ATTACKS PROBABLE SOVIET STRATEGY (Reed. 9.20 p.m.) LONDON, A-ag. 10 A communique on the fighting inside Warsaw issued by the Com-mander-in-Chief of the Polish Underground Army, General Bors, states that the enemy at 3 o'clock in the morning yesterday launched a major concentrated attack with the object of capturing the Old Town in the centre of the city, also the district of Stawki, adjoining the Danzig railway station and marshalling yards. The attack lasted 11 hours and was ■supported by heavy artillery and mortar fire. In spite of the violence of the attack and superior artillery fire the Polish forces launched several counter-attacks and repelled the enemy assaults. The communique adds that in the district of Stawki positions changed hands several times, but in the end Polish troops regained lost ground. They captured some anti-tank guns and ammunition. In the suburb of Zoliporz, a residential area in the north, the Poles improved their positions and enlarged the ground held by their troops. Moscow correspondents gay observers are convinced Warsaw will not be assaulted frontally. The Bed Army massing on the Vistula above and below the city will engulf it.
