QUARTERS OCCUPIED

FIRST COMMUNITY MEAL PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENTS Most of the tenants of the City Connoil's transit camp at Western Springs have now moved into their new homes, thi! majority arriving on Friday and Saturday. The tenants will remain at the ramp until they are allotted State rental houses, probahlv in a few months' time. Some of the tenants have been at the camp for a week, but it was only nn Saturday that the new community dining room was opened. The first meal was served on Saturday night, and it seemed that the hot three-course meal was thoroughly enjoyed. Sharing in the meal were the Mavor and .Mayoress, Mr and Mrs J. A. Allum. the town elerk. Mr T. W. M. Ashhy. and the chairman, Mr If. P. Burton, and niemlicrs of the council's Housing Committee. Overjoyed at having a satisfactory home of their own. even if it is only temporary, the tenants quickly set about, making themselves comfortable and by midday yesterday most had their carpets and linoleums down, their furniture in place, their pictures hung and their ornaments out. In a number of cases the floors bad also been stained.

While tlicir parents busied themselves nbmit the homes, the children spent the week-end in the unaccustomed spaciousness of the camp-site grounds, hi the past many of these children have had to seek their pleasure in restricted backyards or on the streets and their joy knew no bounds as they explored the area. An added asset is the presence of swings and other devices which were adjuncts of the former motor camp. Interest in their communal well-being has already been shown by the resi•dents and yesterday both men's and women's meetings wore hold to discuss ideas for improvements. Of special importance was a decision from the men's meeting to recommend to the City Council that only one hot meal, and not two. bo supplied daily in the dining room. It was considered that breakfast could be satisfactorily prepared in the houses and that the cost of two meals daily, at 3s for adults and children over 12. was too great for large families. BABY GIRL GASSED FOUND LYING BESIDE STOVE (P.A.) DUNEDTX. Saturday A year-old child. Leone Margaret Hobcraft. was fatally gassed at her home in Serpentine Avenue yesterday afternoon. The child's mother left Leone with two small boys in the house for a few minutes, and wjien she returned she found the infant lying on the floor beside the gas stove, the taps of which had been turned on. The child was rushed to hospital, but attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. PILOT-OFFICER KILLED (I'.A.)
