GREAT PORT ON THE LOIRE

(Received August 10, 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, Auguit 10 American forces in France have reached the big river port of Nantes. Late despatches from the front say they are already in the city. Nantes is the biggest French city the Allied forces have yet reached. It has a peacetime population of over 187,000. It is the first city of Brittany and one of the great French river ports. Strategically Nantes is of major importance. It is a focal point of road and rail communications linking Paris with the Atlantic coast and has a sizable shipbuilding industry. In and near Nantes the Germans had taken over major aircraft and armament factories, and its many war targets have been the objectives of Allied air attacks. Messages from Supreme Headquarters says the Germans did not put up much resistance as the American forces closed on Nantes, although there were minefields. The city is also being outflanked by the American forces at Angers, some miles further up the Loire. Angers is now completely surrounded.
