THE LEAGUE CODE

CITY TEAM DEFAULTS SUCCESS FOR MOUNT ALBERT Tho Auckland Rugby League's senior championship was continued at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when the game Marist v. Mount Albert was substituted for that between Manukau and City, the latter team having defaulted. Heavy rain fell throughout the game and there was little constructive football. Tie curtain-raiser, between Ponsonby and Richmond, however, provided a packed stand with an interesting game in which the lonsonby forwards were seen to advantage. t >orth Shore proved too good for Point Chovalicr, while at towlds Park Otahuhu won comfortably from Newton. Mount Albert had a little the better of the luck which often enters into games played on heavy grounds. The Marist backs were prominent early in the first spell, when Costello and Hughes were associated in a good passing bout from which McLcod almost got over Good play by Clement, tho halfback, resulted in Sumich scoring a try for Mount Albert. A few minutes later Simpson scored for Marist. and the half-time score was: Mount Albert, o; Marist, 3. There was no scoring in the second spell. Doth the fullbacks, H. 7,am (Mount Albert) and Brockliss (Marist) played splendidly, and their clean fielding was a featuro of the game. Clement gave a high-class display at halfback, varying his tactics well. Tho Mount Albert five-eighths, Jones and Sumich. were prominent on attack, especially tho latter. McKinnon, Malara *nd Conza played well among the forwards.

Good forward pla.v by Ponsonby was a feature of its narrow victory against Richmond, which made great efforts to overtake a three-points lead. The Ponsonby set mastered the bad ground conditions well and there was some fine dribbling. Hull and Mullett were again prominent, while Fielder and Hardwick were especially good in the loose. Results were:—Mount Albert. 5 (trv by Sumich, converted by Cranch), Marist, 3 (try by Simpson); North Shore, 10 (tries by Graham and Rutherford and two penalty goals by Laing), Point Chevalier, 3 (try by Goffin); Ponsonby, 7 (try by Fielder and two penalty goals by Kay), Richmond, 4 (penalty goals by McDonald and Seymour); Otahuhu. 14 (tries by Brady and N. Johnson. Riley converting two and kicking two penalty goals), Newton. 3 (try by Silva).

ASSOCIATION GAMES DEFEAT OF NAVAL DEPOT The feature of the Auckland Football Association's championship sanies on Saturday was the defeat of Naval Depot, the leading team, by the young North Shore combination in the early fixture at Blandford Park. Although heavy rain fell and made the conditions slippery, good football was witnessed. The lighter and faster North Shoro team deserved its victory, although there was little to chooso between the teams in tho first spell. Good goalkceping by East and sound combination between the back division found the North Shoro forwards well served and the line was always dangerous. In the main attraction Metro-Collego was tho first to show out to advantage. Webber and It. McLuckie harassing the defence, where McCamish, in goal, earned applause for some clever saving. Fincham was also outstanding in breaking up 'many Metro attacks. The latter team had a goal lead at half-time. With everything to gain when it it was two goals down, Comrades made the mistake of falling back instead of attacking. At one stage there were six Comrades dofenders inside the goal area with little or no room to work and giving goalio McCamish little chance of sighting a shot. Following were the scores and scorers:— North Shore, 3 (Archibald. Blackie, Robinson), Naval Depot, 1 (Maguire); MetroCollege, 4 (Woods, 2, Webber, 2), Comrades, 0; Eastern Suburbs, 4 (Welch, 2, Walsham, Reg. King), Air Force. 4 (McLachlan, Saunders, Peebles and a defender); Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, 0 (R. Hutchinson, 4, M Hutchinson, 2), Ponsonby, 1 (Cleal).

SHIELD HOCKEY GAMES The Auckland Hockey Association's second series of senior matches in the Devonport Shield competition was played on Saturday afternoon at Papatoetoe. Continuous rain squalls swept the grounds, making conditions very unpleasant. In the only high-scoring match of the day, Somerville. overran Grammar Old Boys, registering 12 goals to 2. Grammar had difficulty in fielding a full team, having to call upon three juniors who had already participated in an early game. University showed greater penetration and defeated No. 1 Port Depot by 3 goals to 1. In a scrappy game. Training Collego accounted for Mount Eden by 4 goals to 2, while St. Luke's defeated Wesley United by 2 goals to 0. In tho main game, Whenuapai defeated Owai Rovers by the odd goal in five, after an exciting game. Owai Rovers did most of the attacking and had a two-goal lead until well into the second spell. Whenuapai made a remarkable recovery and, with determined attacks, added three goals in quick timo. Following were the scores and scorers:— Whenuapai, 3 (R. Short 2, P. Bade), Owai Rovers. 2 (A. Brumby); Training College, 4 (T. Wyatt 3, L. Gilliver), Mount Eden, 2 (('. Morgan. K. Nairn); St. Luke's, 2, (E. McLeod, H. Foreman), Wesley-United, 0; University. 3 (H. Cooper, B. Thomas, L. RUGBY IN THE SOUTH

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday Canterbury beat the West Coast by 17 points to 3 in a representative Rugby match at Lancester Park yesterday afternoon. The ground was sodden and slippery after 12 hours' steady rain and rain fell at intervals during the match. The Canterbury backs were definitely superior in pace and combination, but West Coast's reply to this was solid tackling by the backs, a particularly good display being tfiven by J. Lindbom. fullback. The West Coast forwards, too, battled well and their dribbling was excellent. Canterbury led K—3 at half-time. West Coast had the better of the play for the first 1.5 minutes of the second spell. It was then, however, that the Canterbury backs besran to dominate the game and put the issue beyond doubt. Scorers for Canterbury were Hewitt, Williams, Foley, Forscutt and Wilson. O'Callaghan converting one try. West Coast's only try was scored b,v Birchfield.
