THE LEAGUE CODE

SUKPBISE BY OTAHUHU DEFEAT OF LEADING TEAM The defeat of City, the loading team in the senior competition, was a feature of the Auckland Rugby League's matches at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. The grounds were very heavy after rain. There was a large crowd present. Mount Albert proved too good for Richmond in the curtain-raiser. North Shore gained a clear-cut victory over Newton on No. 2 ground, while Ponsonby narrowly beat Marist in a well-contested game. Manukau, which is now one point behind City in the championship, was pressed throughout at Grey Lynn Park to defeat Point Chevalier, which led for 50 minutes of tho game. The defeat of City came as a big surprise to followers of the code, but on the day Otahuhu was definitely the better team. The City forwards at no stage had control of the play. Otahuhu held a territorial advantage throughout the first spell. It had a reorganised back line, with Riley, the fullback, doing well at five-eighths, and Fogarty, usually a forward, playing impressively in the backs. Halfway through the first spell Speedy placed Otahuhu on attack with a nice crosskick and Simons, on tne wing, raced hard to score a spectacular try. Just before the bell James scored for City and Donovan converted wit ft a splendid kick from tho side-line. Ihe halftime score favoured Otahuhu by 7 points to 5. In tho second spell the Otahuhu forwards outplayed the City pacK in the loose, and frequent penalties appeared to upset the bustling tactics of the City vanguard. Twice M. Johnson scored for Otahuhu and it was only in tho last 20 minutes that City showed to advantage. The Otahuhu team received a fine ovation from the crowd when tho final bell rang. Rilev played an excellent game for Otahufeu being the most thrustful player on the ground. Halsey (wing) used his speed and power to gain ground. Speedy played a clever game at halfback, varying his tactics well. The Otahuhu forwards deserve a lot of credit for beating a recognised powerful set. N. and M. Johnson played splendidly and Hughes, hooker, served his backs well, For City, Solaia and Matthews were the best of tho bacKs, while Mataira and James were prominent among the forwards. Results were:—Otahuhu. 15 (tries by M. Johnson 2, and Simons, Riley converting two and kicking a penalty goal), City, 10 »tries bv James and Solaia, A. Donovan converting both); Mount Albert, 13 (tries by J. Zane. Cranch and Clement, and two penalty goals by Cranch), Richmond, 6 (tries by McGregor aiid Thompson); Ponsonby, 11 (tries by Brasscy 2, and Rex Nurse, and penalty goal by Roy Nurse), Marist, 8 (tries by McLeod and White, and penalty goal by Brockliss): North Shore. 23 (tries by Graham 2, Taylor, Cave, McArthur. Humphreys and Hispocks, Laing converting one), Newton, S (tries bv Niwa and Kerr. Elliott converting one); Manukau, S (tries by Roge.rs and Murray, Butler converting one).
