THE LEAGUE CODE

CITY RETAINS LEAD

WIN FOR POINT CHEVALIER The Auckland Rugby League's senior championsliip matches drew another large crowd to Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon. The games wore closely contested 011 heavy grounds. By defeatiug Ponsonby. City remains at the head of the championship table. The principal game, between Richmond and Otahuhu, did riot produce much spectacular football, and victory went to Richmond', which gained only 0110 try from the nine points 6cored. In the, curtain-raisor Manukau gave a good display of passing to defeat Mount Albert. Point Chevalier won its first game of the season by narrowly defeating Newton. Marist won a close gaino from North Shore at Ellerslie. x The Richmond backs proved too fast for the Otahuhu set, although the former had few really good scoring chances. A splendid try by McGregor, the Richmond centre, who badly beat the opposition in a swerving run, was a feature of the first spoil. The Otahuhu forwards, with Fogarty and N. Johnson prominent, did effective work just before the bell, but could not get accoss. The half-timo score favoured Richmond by 7 points to 0. Early in the second spell Otahuhu lost McMauus, who was injured, and thereafter played one short. The Richmond backs received plenty of chances from Williams, the halfback, but there was little penetration from the inside men. Tho Richmond forwards dominated the play in the final stages. Good constructive back play was a feature of Manukau's win against Mount Albert. Manukau is fast gaining form and' is likely to provide strong opposition in future games. Butler was the outstanding Manukau back, while Murray and R. Martin stood out for excellent, defence. Results were:—Richmond, a (try by McGregor, McDonald converting, and penalty goals by McDonald and Williams), Otahuhu,' (i; Manukau, 10 (tries b.v Murray and Butler. 'Butler converting one and Murray one). Mount Albert, "2 (penalty goal by Crunch); Point Chevalier, i) (try by Croad and three penalty goals by Dormer), Newton, 7 (try by Sorljy and penalty goals by Elliott and Duncan); City, I (tiies by Jackson, Matthews, Turnbull, A.
