RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR COMPETITION MAR IST DEFEATS GRAMMAR Wintry weather conditions prevailed on Saturday afternoon, when the Auckland Rugby Union's senior championship competition was continued. The grounds were heavy, and frequent rain squalls made matters unpleasant for the spectators on the terraces. The principal match at Eden Park was that between Maris! and Grammar Old Boys on the oval. Showing much improved form. Maris! scored an easy victory by 27 points to 12, after leading 1!) —a at half-time. University defeated Manuka ii on No 3 ground at Kden Park, Training College drew with Otahuhu at St urges Park, while Navy accounted fur Technical Old Boys at Devon port. The team-play ol the Maris! fifteen was altogether 100 good for Grammar. Both 1 sides i threw the, ball about freely, and it was quite I a good game under the conditions. Once the Maris! team obtained a comfortable lead, its players took risks. The best try of the match I was that scored when Sorensoti, the Marist | full-back, started a movement right on his own j goal-line. He passed to Rae. and the ball was handled in turn by Neary, Adams, Rae again, Hogan. Sorenson had to leave the field with a iiead injury a few minutes before time, but it is understood it is not serious, and thai he will be playing at fullback for the representative side at Hamilton this afternoon. Gunning, McHiigh and Hogan played well in Hie forwards. Gilmour, Kvaus and Healey were the best of the Grammar pack Results were: Senior First Division. Marisl, . Mr. Dean has obtained a wrong impression. So far as Auckland is concerned, it wants all the matches which can possibly be played at Eden Park." THE LEAGUE CODE CITY BEATS NORTH SHORE In spite of rain and a heavy ground, the game between City and Xorth Shore at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon proved one of the best of the Auckland Rugby League's competition matches. Play at times rose to a high standard, and both teams made it very attractive. City proved successful, although North Shore went close to turning the tables. In the curtain-raiser, Marist narrowly defeated Richmond in a well-contested game. Otahuhu and Manukaii easily accounted for Point Chevalier and Xewlon respectively. Mount Albert narrowly won from Ponsonhy at Devonport City gained an early advantage over North Shore, its forwards dominating trie game in the first spell, which ended: City, 7; North Shore, 3. City went further into the lead and, with a margin of nine points, appeared to hold a decided advantage. However, play then fluctuated in favour of North Shore, and its forwards, Graham, Hunt and Field, put in some effective work. A converted try scored between the posts by Rutherford brought the teams within one point of each other. A few minutes before time, the City backs rose io the occasion splendidly, and from a passing bout Taylor scored, to place the result hevorid donht. Salaia. centre, was the pick of the City backs, making several clever openings Turnbuil was sound al five-eighths, while A. Donovan, halfback, controlled the play well. Mataira was the besl forward on the ground, and excellent play in the loose was done by E. Donovan, Jackson and Bodman. Laing and FJumphries performed well in the North Shore back line. Results were:—City. I.i (tries by Matthews. Salaia and Taylor. A. Donovan converting two and kickintr a penalty coal), North Shore. II itries by Graham. Laing and Rutherford. Point Chevalier, a (try by Barnes); Mount Albert. 5 (try by McKinnon, Cranchconverting). Ponsonhv, 2 (penalty goal by Nurse) ASSOCIATION GAMES In spite of slippery conditions, play in the Auckland Football Association's senior championship on Saturday was of good standard, the early game at. Bbtndford Park, between Kastern Suburbs and Comrades, providing exciting and clever football. In the main attraction, between Metro-College and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, both teams lined up in silence for a minute as a mark of respect to Metro's outside right. A. Brass, who lost his mother during the week, the Metro team wearing black arm bands. Play in the first spell was fairly even, without a great lot of sparkle R. Speed was the pick of the Mount Albert defence and, with ward in the pivot position, made many openings for the front line, where Thompson, on the right, was always dangerous. R. Woodhall. the usna right fullback, was up in the centre-forward position, and played well in conjunction witti Hutchinson.
