THE LEAGUE CODE

MANUKAU JUST WINS SURPRISE BY NORTH SHORE A closely-contested and exciting game was witnessed at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, when Manukau defeated Ponsonby by 4 pointe to 2 in the principal match under the control of the Auckland Rugby League. There was an attendance estimated at between 7000 and .8000. The playing conditions were perfect. North Shore created a big surprise by defeating Otahuhu, the leading team, in the curtainraiser. This match provided a high standard and was intensely exciting. Richmond was successful against an improved Xcwton team, while City proved too good for Marist. Mount Albert narrowly defeated Point Chevalier at Walker Park. There were bright flashes of constructive play in the game between Manukau and Ponsonby, which put up much stronger opposition than was expected. In fact, Ponsonby was a little unlucky not to win, as its forwards outplayed Manukau in the last 20 minutes. Neither team scored a try, and at half-time Manukau led by 2 points to 0. Rapana, the Ponsonby fullback, was unlucky not to equalise the scores from a long-range penalty, the ball hitting an upright and rebounding. Both teams threw the ball about in great style in the second spell, but the deadly tackling of Ponsonby checked each Manukau movement, lladley and Hull did splendid work in leading the Ponsonby forwards, who many times threatened the Manukau line. Manukau's failure to score was due mostly to the fast covering defence of the Ponsonb.v vanguard. The handling of the Manukau backs could not be faulted. Ponsonby was a little unlucky not to be awarded a try which Manley appeared to score in the first spell. Otahuhu missed the services of Hughes, its hooker, and the backs therefore lacked opportunities against North Shore. The latter, however, gave an improved display and deserved its success. Kesults were:—Manukau. 4 (two penalty goals by Butler), Ponsonby, 2 (penalty goal by Rapana); North Shore, 11 (tries by Graham, 2, and Greenwood. McArthur converting one), Otahuhu, S (tries by lJalsey and Fogarty, Riley converting one); Richmond. 12 (tries by Potter and Whittaker. McDonald converting one and Magill kkkjns a penalty goal and converting one. try), Newton, 5 (try by Elliott, converted by Niwa); Citv, 21 (tries b.v Taylor, 3, Saiaia and James, Clarke converting three), Marist, 13 (tries by Rang), McLeod and White, Brockliss converting one and kicking a penalty goal); Mount Albert, 18 (tries by Clement, 2. ASSOCIATION GAMES Fast and exciting football was witnessed by a good attendance at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon in the first division championship series of the Auckland Football Association In the main attraction, between Comrades and Metro-College, the latter showed to better advantage, but the strong defence drove' the forwards back, McCamish in goal clearing well under pressure. The half-time score of 1-all was a good criterion of the play. Metro's lead of one goal in the second spell was the reward for sound combination. and it was not until Fincham went from centre-half to the front line that Comrades became aggressive to equalise in the last few minutes. In the early match, between Ponsonby and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, there was no score at half-time. Mount Albert lost the services of its goalkeeper, Sims for a while in the first spell and later Ponsonby lost its goalkeeper, Gavan. Old Boys then scored the only goal of the match.
