City narrowly won and deserved its victory. Manukau, last year's champion team, waa defeated for the second time. This wae in the curtain-raiser, Otahuhu winning by a sinsrle try. 'lhe best football in the City-Richmond match was witnessed in the first spell when the City backs dominated the play. The Richmond back 6 were hampered by the ground conditions, combined with sterling defence by uty. A penalty goal to each team was the only score in the first spell. Richmond made great efforts to pull the game out of the fire, and actually scored between the posts a minute before time, to get. within two points of City. Clarke, at fullback, played an outstanding game for City, his defence beins: superb. Matthews, on the wing, used his speed to advantage, and Coesey was a tower of strength in every attack. Mataira, Jackson and James wero prominent among the forwards for whom Leatherbarrow hooked successfully. Possession of the ball from set scrums greatly assisted Otahuhu to narrowly beat Manukau. ASSOCIATION GAMES

HIGH SCORING GENERAL

High scoring was a feature of the Auckland Football Association's matches played under greasy conditions on Saturday afternoon, but nevertheless a good standard of play was maintained. Proceedings at Blandford Park were opened by Eastern Suburbs and Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys. Both teams started short, but when they were at full strength a great game resulted in Suburbs taking the full points. Comrades and Naval Depot met in the main game, which 'was full of interest. Naval Depot was without three of its regular piasters, while early in the game Bell (fullbifck) was injured. While the substitutes played well, the combination suffered, and Comrades, playing superbly, established a three-iroal lead at half-time. In the second spell very even played followed, but, while Navy could do everything but score. Comrades' breakaways generally resulted in goais. The final score of eicht clear goals was flattering to Comrades. Following were the scores and scorers:— Comrades. 8 (Fleet 3, Walters 2, Evans, Fineham and a defender), Naval Depot, 0; Eastern Suburbs. 6 ("Welch 3, Dempsey 2, Collings),Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys, 4 (Wilkinson 3, Thompson); Metro-College, 15 (Hanam 2.
