CITY OFFICIALS
TWO VACANT POSTS FORTY APPLICATIONS CLERK AND ENGINEER Twenty-four applications for the position of town clerk of Auckland and 16 for that of city engineer have been received by the City Council, according to a report made to the council at its meeting last night. After considerable discussion on procedure, it was decided that both sets should be referred to the Finance Committee to select a suitable number of preferred names in each instance as a guide to the council in making a final choice. Applications had been invited from residents of New Zealand, and precis of the conditions of appointment had been cabled for circulation among members of the New Zealand armed forces in the Mediterranean region and the Pacific. The Mayor, .Mr, •). A. C. Ailum, informed the council that there was evidence that these measures had been effective. He was sure the council could get all the information it needed about applicants who were on service overseas. The Mavor moved that the application-; he referred to the Finance Committee to reduce to three in each case, with t'.ie proviso thai all councillors should be given an opportunity to peruse the pa ieis and to be present at the committee's sittings, if they desired. An amendment was moved by Mr. 1 1 . X Ambler, to the effect that the review should be carried out by the whole council at special meetings, without delegation of any part of the work to a committee. , After the Mavor had been allowed to "delete the reference to three names from his motion, and had explained that the committee's findings would exclude no applicant from consideration, the amendment was put and declared lost on the voices. The committee was authorised to seek expert advice regarding the applications for the position of citv engineer if it considered such advice necessary Five applications were received lor the position of city valuer, registrar of electors and returning officer. 1 hey were referred to the finance Committee for a recomutendation.
