COUNCIL RESOLUTIONS OVERSEAS PARCEL POSTAGE At the meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women, presided over by Miss Alice Basten. the following resolutions were approved for remission to the Dominion office: — 41) That the Minister of Defence be urged to authorise a payment of not less than 14s a week for the support of the illegitimate children of servicemen, this sum to be made up by allotment from the serviceman and by an allowance from the Government. (2) .'That provision under social security be made available on application for the support of illegitimate children by a benefit of not less than 10s 6d a week, especially in certain difficult cases where for various reasons maintenance cannot be obtained from the father. It was unanimously resolved that the Dominion executive be asked to take up with the Government the matterof postage on overseas civilian parcels with a view to having it reduced, or restored to the former rate of 3s 4d for 71b. A letter received from the Dominion president intimated that the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, had invited the council to send a delegate to the education conference to be held in August in Christchurch. A favourable reply had also been received from the Minister regarding the desirability of inaugurating social services diploma courses in the university co'leges of New Zealand. GOLDEN WEDDINGS The golden wedding of 31 r. arid Mrs. Andrew Thomson. Wallingford Street, Grev Lynn, was celebrated by a gathering of relatives and friends at Cooke s Tearooms. Mr. Thomson, who is the second son of the Sate Mr. and Mrs. J. Thomson, of Kirkcaldy. Scotland, was married in I sis native town on April 27. 3594. his wife being the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Penman, ako of Kirkcaldy. They arrived in New Zealand with their three children early in 1901 and for some years Mr. Thomson was engaged in the building trade. Later he became the manager of a tea factory for Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Company, Limited, until his retirement in" 1938. He has been an officebearer of the Church of Christ for ,30 vears. There are two sons, four daughters and 12 grandchildren living. VY HANGAR El CELEBRATION Celebrating their golden wedding tmuversarv. Mr. and Airs. ilham Lett, of Whangarei, met friends and relatives at the home of their daughter. Mrs, Rufus Hardie, on Anzac Day. Air and Mrs. Lett were married at Manukau and for 25 years lived at Masterton, later spending a few years at Hamilton before coming to Whangarei over 20 years ago. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lett were born in New Zealand, Mr. Lett at Wellington and Mrs. Lett at Upper Hutt. A keen cricketer. Mr. Lett played his last game only two years ago. There are two sons, one daughter and eight grandchildren. GROWING INFLUENCE An address on the ever-widening scope of women's interests provided by the social, civic and international problems of the day was given bv Miss Joan Mattray at the usual monthly meeting of the' New Zealand Housewives' Associa tion.
