PUBLIC CLOCKS
MAINTENANCE DIFFICULTY The City Council is still meeting with much difficulty in having its public clocks expertly maintained. It was reported at last night's meeting that the present contract for the Town Hall and Public Library clocks had expired on April 9 and the contractor had declined to renew it. The city engineer's department was doing what was possible with its own electricians, but these men were not experts in the maintenance and repair of clocks. Moreover, they had little time to spare for the work. The acting-city engineer, Mr. A. J. Dickson, recommended that tenders be invited, to see whether a competent man could be found willing to undertake the work. The recommendation was adopted. A letter bearing 82 signatures was received, asking that the clock in the Ponsonby post office tower be again placed in working order. Mr. Dickson reported that the clock movement was out-of-date and had given considerable trouble ever since the council took over its maintenance in 1914. He considered that nothing should be done until a new movement could be obtained. Consideration of the matter was deferred until after the war. DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF (P.A.)
