RACING NEWS

WAIKATO MEETING FIELDS IN CHIEF EVENTS BY ARCHER The last time -the four-year-old Tweedsmuir was successful was when he won the Waikato Cup at Te Rapa on November 20. On that occasion he carried 7.11 and ran the mile and a-half in 2.33, winning by half a length from Air Port, 7.9, with Merry May, 7.4, another half-length away third. In the meantime Tweedsmuir has been unplaced fire times, but he ran well enough for fifth in the Foley Memorial Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday week to indicate that he is likely to make an early return to winning form. Tweedsmuir is engaged in the Storey Memorial Handicap, 1% rnilee, principal event at the Waikato Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Te Rapa next Saturday, with 7.13, and he may start favourite. It is probable that he will be all the better for his autumn racing, as he is a gross customer and at Easter looked just- a little above himself. What beats Tweedsmuir on Saturday should svin, although it may not be entirely to his advantage if the track is really heavy, which appears likely. Foley Memorial Form In the Foley Memorial Handicap Tweedsmuir beat five ot the horses he will have to oppose in the Storey Memorial Handicap. They were Volifox, Town Survey, Merry May, Ringlight and Kinsman. The weights are almost the same, although on Saturday he will meet both T O-,vn Survey and Ringliglit lib better and Merry May lib worse. The are that Tweedsmuir will beat them all again, but on a very heavy track Town Survey and Merry May may give him a lot of trouble. Town Survey ran solidly in his autumn engagements without winning, and he has n ;ver looked better. Merry May has disappointed in her last two starts, but this may be her opportunity to make amends. She has not won this season, but has good seconds in the Auckland Cup and the Herries Memorial Cup to her credit. If she reproduce*? tie form she displayed in those races she should be well in the picture. Town Survey was not far behind Tweedsmuir m the Foley Memorial Handicap, actually finishing seventh, and he will be racing on his home course on this occasion. In addiwon to Town Survey, Mr. W. S. Goosman and trainer A. Winder also have Jollyfox en gaged. Jollyfox was brought to Ellerslie for the autumn racing, but a slight injur* prevented him from running. It is quite on the cards that this improving four-year-old will win a good race under a light weight over a middle distance, and he may go very well if produced fit. Jollyfox's last win was in the Champion Hack Handicap at Te Aroha in February, when he ,carried 8.4 and ran the mile and a-quarter in 2.7. He has appeared only once sinc-e and on that occasion, he lost his chance by swinging round at the start. Position o! Volifox On a reasonably dry track Volifox should make a good showing, although she is now iti a position ;n the weights where she is not S "?u V". eag y- Air Port, equal top-weight with Volifox, has 6hown improvement this season and has been racing very consistently. In his last five starts he has had three firsts and a third, and at his last appearance he carried 8.2 and won the Tauranga Cup at £ aeroa in very convincing fashion. Erndale is another recent winner, and, although beaten at Ellerslie in the autumn, he ran good l races, his best being a close second to Fortunes Smile in the President's Handicap, 1% miles. Air Port and Erndale excel when the ground is heavy and they may have the conditions' right t-o their liking. Full Hand has failed in his last four starts and on that account he may be out of favour. However, he is capable of a good effort. With Full Hand and The Dozer in the field it is probable that the race will be solidly run from the start. The Dozer was unlucky that he did not win the two steeple chases at Ellerslie at Easter, falling at the last fence on the second day when he appeared to have victory assured, and he is in good racing order. However, he is setting up in years and whether he can still produce winning form on the fiat in a good handicap field may be_doubtful. Ringlight and Kinsman have failed just lately and therefore may not appeal. However, Kinsman may show some improvement. The favourites may be Tweedsmuir, Merry May and Town Survey. The President's Handicap Some good performers are engaged in the President s Handicap, seven furlongs, the open sprint event- at Te Rapa on Saturday, and it may provide a very interesting contest. The top-weight, Monte Cristo, showed a glimpse of form at Ellerslie at Easter, running third in the Islington Handicap, and he should have good prospects, especially as soft ground and a left-handed track will be to his liking. Two of the most difficult he may have to beat are Golden Survey and Llandine, who are fairlv recent winners. The last time they ran at Te Rapa was in March, when Llaadine beat Golden Survey by half a length in the Pukekohe Handicap, six furlongs. It may be worth remembering that the weather was wet and the track heavy that day. Lack of recent racing may be against Expellant, who has not appeared since August, and a better prospect may be Lady Pay, who has run several irood races this season and is due for a win. Aguilo, Soutane and Quination are possibilities, and Peter Gregor, who has not won since he scored at Trentham in July, would be very .hard to beat if he were to reproduce his best. Peter Gregor has been showing indications of a return to form. Betterman, who relishes soft going, and Salmi can run the distance solidly. Town Section has no recent form, and Taku Kara is just coming back after a rest. Gentry and' Gaymeer will have to show improvement to beat this field, and Hunting Camp may b§ better placed in the hack class. Popular fancies may include Monte Cristo. Llaadine and Peter Gregor. SUCCESS OF JACK HIGH Jack High, winner of the Hutt Handicap at the Wellington trotting meeting at Treatham last Saturday, is owned by Mr. W. Johnstone and trained at Turakina by A. W. Broughton. Last season, Jack High, who is by Gamble from the well-performed Lady Dunmore, revealed a lot of promise for G. T. Mitchell, leaving the impression that, with 8 little more experience, he would not remain long in the slower classes. TO CORRESPONDENTS "Karapiro," Cambridge.—Sasanoff was the first horse to beat Gloaming, the race being the G G.
