Nordmeyer, announced to-day that the Government had decided to send to Australia the well-known Wellington pathologist, Dr. P. P. Lynch, for the purpose of investigating the possibility of manufacturing penicillin in New Zealand. "There are certain technical dimcul» ties in the manufacture of this substance which may be difficult to overcome but it will be Dr. Lynch s function to examine the facts closely and to report 011 the position.'' stated Mr. Nordmeyer. '"The beneficial effects of penicillin in certain cases are so marked that the Government feels that every avenue should be explored in order to increase the supply available. If it proved impracticable to manufacture it here efforts will be made to secure a regular supply from overseas, preferably from Australia." ' LOCAL AND GENERAL Vegetable Supplies Supplies of vegetables were again heavy at the City Markets on Monday, but the demand was only poor owing to the closing of shops yesterday. Lettuce was considerably dearer and realised os to 20s a case, compared with 2s to as at the end of last week. JThere was an increase in values of peas and beans, but pumpkins and cauliflowers were cheaper. Hundredweight Pumpkins The huge pumpkins, each weighing well over a hundredweight, have been brought to Auckland from Katikati by an officer of the Internal Marketing Division. Grown by Mr. G.
