LOSS TO SPORT

MR. W. E. DERVAN FOOTBALL AND BOXING One of Auckland's best-known sportsmen, Mr. W. E. Dervan, died at his residence, 4 St. Stephen's Avenue. Parnell, early yesterday morning. Mr. Dervan, who had been in indifferent health recently, attended the boxing contests at the Town Hall on Monday evening, but, instead of doing the announcing as usual, he occupied a seat at the ringside. Mr. Dervan was educated at the Marist Brothers' School, Pitt Street, and from the time lie left he always took a keen interest in all branches of sport, lie first played senior football for the original Marist Brothers' Old Boys' Club, and Inter changed to the League code, joining the Newton Rangers' Club. After gaining representative honours, lie was selected to tour Australia with the Now Zealand team in 1913. being one of the forwards.

In boxing circles Mr. Dervan became widely ,'uul popularly known. He joined the Auckland Boxing Association in 1914. and held various executive positions. For the past 20 years he had been a familiar figure as official announcer for boxing- contests at the Town Hall. He acted as manager of teams to other parts of New Zealand, and represented his association at Dominion conferences. Mr. Dervan was particularly keen on school sport and invariably assisted with the conduct of schools boxing championship tournaments. In recognition of his great services to the sport, the Auckland association elected him a lifemember a few years ago. In his yousiger days Mr. Dervan was a good swimmer, being a member of the Waitemata club. He was also the first announcer for the Auckland Wrestling Association. While lie made boxing his hobby, Mr. Dervan was a liberal patron of all sports. Although not a player himself, he was an enthusiastic follower of cricket and was always in attendance at Eden Park when an overseas team or representative team from the south was in action. Mr Dervan's business interests were in the licensing trade, from which he retired about eight years ago. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. Griffin made the fullest use of a big advantage in reach. There was a capacity house. TEST CRICKETER DEAD LONDON, April 17 The death has occurred of ,T. T. Hearne, former England and Middlesex cricketer, at the age of 76. J ,T. Hearne was a member of a famous English cricketing family. He played for Middlesex from 1889 to 1914, and during the greater part of that period was the mainstay of the team in bowling. He was a member of A. E. Stoddart's English team which visited Australia in 181)7-98. playing in all five tests Hearne also played for England against Australia in England in 1890 and 1899. He had a coaching engagement in India for some seasons. Of fast-medium pace, he. is one of three English bowlers who have performed the hat trick in a test match. This feat he accomplished at Leeds in 1899, when, with consecutive balls, he dismissed C. Hill. S. E. Gregory and M. A. Noble. BOWLING CONTESTS Hamilton.—A game for the permanent possession of the Waikato Challenge Pairs Shield, held on the Hamilton East Bowling Club's green, was won by W. Payne and P. Exelbv (Frank(on). who defeated A. Webber and J. W. Shirley (Clajidelands), 22—10. Each club had won the trophy three times in the past (en years, and another trophy will have to be provided for the series of ganys held over the next ten years.
