OPENING OF SEASON PRELIMINARY ROUND PLAYED The Auckland Rugby League had a successful openiiiK at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon, when a series of senior grade preliminary matches was played. A number of new players appeared in the various teams and the Karrie« were decided under splendid ground conditions. A Point Chevalier team made its debut in the senior ranks and did well to defeat Otahuhu. In the main mateh, Ponsonby fielded a heavy pack to win a well-contested game from Mount Albert. Both clubs took the advantage of trying new talent. Among the Ponsonby forwards 0. Hadley, R. R. Hull and W. McDonnell showed good form in the loose. Easily the most impressive form was shown by Manukau, • last year's champion side, which defeated Newton comfortably. A new player to the code. W. SCHOOLS' ROWING REGATTA ON HARBOUR MOUNT ALBERT WINS AGAIN The annual secondary schools' rowing regatta was held at Westhaven on Saturday afternoon under good conditions, although the wind made the water a little choppy in parts. The principal event, the Head-of-the-iiarbour Eights, was again won by Mount Albert Grammar, this making the school's seventh win in eight years. Crews from Si. YACHT RACING ANNUAL CUP DAY VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB Strong northerly winds prevailed for the Victoria Cruising Club's annual cup day, held off Westhaven on Saturday afternoon. There were large entries in most of the classes, the smaller boats predominating. Spectacular sailing was witnessed as the boats came upharbour witli spinnakers set and some thrilling incidents created keen excitement among the spectators. Two capsizes were reported, but only minor damage resulted, and the boats were all well handled by their youthful crews.
