furlough wedding PEMBERTON—HOOTON The wedding took place at St, Barnabas' Church, Mount Eden, yesterday afternoon of Miss Mary Helen Hooton, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hooton, of Mount Eden, and Major Richard Charles Pemberton, M.C. and bar, only sou of Dr. and Mrs. 0. A. Pemberton, of Christchurch. The Rev. G. Monteith officiated and Mr. P. Wright, chaplain, played the wedding music. The bridegroom and his best man, Lieutenant M. H. Kemp, of Christchurch, are at present on furlough from Lhe Middle East. The bride was given away by her father arid attended bv her sister, Miss Joan Hooton. Both the bride and her bridesmaid wore summer suits of aquarelle crepe with navy'accessories, lhe bride carried a sheaf of cream water lilies and the bridesmaid a bouquet of apricot begonias. The bride's mother wore a wine ensemble and carried a posy in clover and wine tonings. MOTHERS' UNION Speaking at the first quarterly meeting of 1944 of the executive of the Diocesan Mothers' Union, at which Mrs. Simkin presided, the Bishop of Auckland, the lit. Rev. W. J. Simkin. said he felt that too much was being put down to war conditions, arid he hoped that the Mothers' Union would be more active than ever in its efforts to combat immorality among young people. Bishop Simkin emphasised the need of early Confirmation, and the duty of parents to go with their children to Holy Communion. The presentation of a table lamp was made to Mrs. N. J. Mason, diocesan secretary and treasurer, who has resigned as she is leaving the district. Mrs. Blackwood Moore was elected sectary and Mrs. R. G. Slornan treasurer. Mrs. ]{. G. Coats, Mrs. W. W. Averill, Mrs. Babbington and Mrs. R. G. E. Simmons were elected to represent the Mothers' Union on the National Council of Women. Later the members were entertained to lunch by Mrs. Simkin. LEAP YEAR DANCE Leap Year was celebrated at the Town Hall last night at a dance organised by the American Red Cross Service Club. The spirit of the occasion was depicted in cartoons and by special novelty dances. An American Army band supplied the music and a floor show was presented during the intermission.
