Official War Correspondent) j ITALY, Feb. 22 ; Two members of the New Zealand i press delegation to Britain, Messrs. W. lA. Whitlock and P. H. Freefh, extended their tour to include a short visit to the New Zealand troops in Italy. Upon arrival by plane from Algiers they* stayed at the New Zealand Club in Bari and visited an advanced base, They spent a few days with the division in the field as the guests of LieutenantGeneral Freyberg's mes.s and several times went to the forward areas, where they saw much shelling and bombing around Cassino. Both editors saw service in the last war and were keenly interested in the methods and weapons employed in this. Among many people they met were the senior officers at the Fifth Army headquarters. They are returning to England by-plane. ■ OBITUARY | 1" MR. THOMAS JOYCE ■ (0.c.) KAIKOHE, Thursday The death has occurred at Paihia of .Mr. Thomas Joyce, aged 80. Born at ■ Paihia, Mr. Joyce was the .-son of Mr. T. Joyce and .Mrs. Joyce'. Airs. Joyce as a. girl lived with the early missionary families. Leaving New Zealand in his youth, Mr. Joyce engaged in pearl fishing in New Guinea waters, returning periodically to his homeland. About 30 years ago he settled permanently in the Dominion and conducted a launch service in the Bay of Islands for nearly 50 years. He took an active part ia the Paihia Church affairs and for a time was chairman of the school.committee, being a member at the time of : his death. He is survived by two sons. MRS. MARGARET CHAPPELL ; (0.C.) HAMILTON, Thursday The death has occurred, of Mrs. Margaret Chappell, of Pirongia, aged 77 years. Mr?. Chappell was born at Ota-' liuhu and accompanied her father, the i late Captain John Burns, to the mili- , tary settlement of Pirongia. then known as Alexandra, as an infant. She married the late Mr. W. G. Chappell, ■ of Pirongia, in ISOO. Mrs. Chappell is survived by a family of five. LODGE CENTENARY MANCHESTER UNITY The centenary of the foundation in Auckland of the first lodge of the Chester Cnity, Independent Order of Oddfellows, will be marked by celebrations beginning to-morrow.'The functions will be attended by many representatives of the 7o lodges of the order in the Auckland district.
