FORMAL CEREMONY
CROWDED GALLERIES HOUSE STARTS WORK (S.R.) WELLINGTON. Wednesday The ceremonial opening of the 27th Parliament was performed this afternoon by His Excellency the GovernorGeneral. Sir Cyril Newall, It was carried out with the traditional formalities and concluded with the reading of the Speech from the Throne in the legislative Council chamber. Brilliant sunshine favoured the occasion, and the arrival in the grounds of 1. arliament House of His Excellency, who was accompanied by Lady Newail, was witnessed by a considerable crowd. Alter inspecting the guard of honour which was provided by the Artillery framing Regiment the GovernorGeneral proceeded to the Legislative Council chamber. llie galleries were filled to overflowing. many of the onlookers being uni 6 to secure seats. The members of the House of Representatives, headed by the new Speaker, the Hon. F. W. Schramm, were summoned to the chamber to hear the Speech from the Throne, the reading of which occupied 25 minutes. On returning to their chamber members of the House of Representatives dealt with formal business, this being chiefly confined to members giving notices of questions. Twelve questions wery tabled and in several of them two ami three members were associated. Notice that he would move the Ad-dress-in-Reply was given by Mr. P. G. Connolly (Government—Dunedin West) and the House then adjourned at 3.22 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. to-morrow.
