YOUNG AIRMAN'S DEATH FORMERLY IN TRAINING CORPS Killed when an aircraft operating from a North Island station crashed on Monday during instrument Hying practice, Sergeant A. A. Carless was the only sou of Mr. and Mrs. Norman P. Carless, of Epsom. He was 19 and was educated at the Normal School, Auckland Grammar School and King's College.
Sergeant Carless was an active member of the Air Training Corps at King's College and joined the Air Force in January. 1943. He gained his wings in October, 1943, and completed his advanced training in New Zealand. SOLDIER LOST AT SEA Formerly listed as prisoner of war, Sergeant Donald McKenzie, whose wife is Mrs. Elsie McKenzie, of 748 Mount Eden Road, has now been reported lost at sea. He was on an enemy ship which was torpedoed in August. 1942, when transporting prisoners to Italy.
Sergeant McKenzie was educated at the Te Puke High School and was a well-known League football player, being a member of the Newton club. He entered the. Army in October, 1910, left New Zealand in September, 1941, with an early reinforcement draft, and saw service in the desert campaigns.
PRICE NEGOTIATIONS IMPORTS AND EXPORTS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The Minister of Marketing, the Hon. B. Roberts, stated to-ciav that the remarks of Mr. A. J. Murdoch, M.P., at the Northland dairy conference to the effect that negotiations were now in progress between the British and New Zealand Governments with regard to an increase in the price .paid for butter were inaccurate and apt to give a wrong impression. "No specific negotiations with regard to butter and cheese prices are in progress." the Minister said, "but discussions are taking place on the increases in prices paid for materials and goods imported into New Zealand relative to the prices of New Zealand export products. Mr. Nash is making appropriate representations while he is m London." NEW WING-COMMANDER OFFICER FROM LEVIN (0.0.) CJTSBOTtXK. Wednesday Squadron-Leader R. Webb, of Levin, who has been flying Spitfires in the Mediterranean area, has been promoted to wing commander, according to advice received by his wife, who is staying in Gisborne with her parents. Wing-Com-mander Webb's squadron recently distinguished itself when it shot down four Messerschmitts in five minutes. He accounted for one of them.
