SOVIET BEEAK-THBOUGII MENACE NORTH AND SOUTH GREAT FORCES POISED (Eerd. 12.10 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 23 The threat of another major Red Army break-through is facing the Germans at either end of the Russian front, says Renter's Moscow correspondent. As the Baltic front armies rapidly clear the approaches to Pskov, a whole Soviet Army group is well positioned for a drive against Bessarabia and , the Rumanian border. The northern armies are rolling hack the Germans on a huge semi-cir-cular front from Lake Peipus to points over 100 miles south from Lake Union, opening up a path for a direct east to west drive against the Latvian border. The victorious Russians in the Dnieper bend, where the Germans have lost the last big industrial gains in the iron ore city of Krivoi Rog, are ready to renew the push on tlie road to Nikolaev and Odessa. The Paris radio states that the battles in Russia have reached a new and exceptional pitch of fury. Clearly the Russian winter offensive has entered the second phase. The Russians in the Dnieper bend, with massed forces of armour, battle planes and infantry numerically far superior to the Germans, are exerting ever-growing pressure. The Vichy radio reports that lighting lias flared up in the Rogaehev area after several weeks' lull.
